When the Democrats thought they were on the cusp of installation of the Democrat Total State they were rapidly building multiple paramilitary forces as all totalist systems do. USSR had two separate Armies and the NKVD/KGB and armed “militias.” Leftists and totalists generally do not trust the normal Armed Forces of their countries and construct backuups in case the military takes a notion to take over which is feared.

About 18 years ago, I had a visit with an IRS agent at their offices. The agent was carrying a stainless steel revolver -- don't remember the mfgr or what it was chambered in.
