Lawmakers in Russia’s lower-house State Duma on Tuesday ratified a 20-year strategic partnership treaty with Iran, deepening military and political ties between the two countries as they remain under heavy Western sanctions. The pact, signed by President Vladimir Putin and his Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian in January, aims to strengthen cooperation in areas including defense, intelligence sharing, trade and nuclear energy. “The agreement takes [Russian-Iranian relations] to a fundamentally new level,” Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin said last week ahead of the vote. One of the treaty’s key provisions commits Russia and Iran to counter shared security threats, exchange intelligence and refrain from aiding an aggressor if either country is attacked.

The two Russias: How the real Russia began in Kiev, not Moscow...
The true roots of Russia lie not in Moscow, but in Kiev, the capital of present-day Ukraine. This is not a matter of opinion but of history: Kiev was founded around 482 AD, making it one of the oldest cities in Eastern Europe. By contrast, Moscow would not appear in historical records until 1147 AD—more than 650 years later.
In the 9th century, Norse traders and warriors—the Varangians, or Vikings—sailed down the rivers of Eastern Europe and united local Slavic tribes into the state of Kievan Rus’. With its capital in Kiev, this early Russian state became a major European power, adopting Christianity from Byzantium in 988 under Vladimir the Great and fostering a vibrant, outward-looking culture.
Then came the Mongol invasion in the 13th century. Kiev was sacked in 1240, and the Kievan Rus’ fell into decline. During this period, the small and relatively new town of Moscow rose to prominence—not through resistance, but through collaboration with the Mongol rulers of the Golden Horde. Moscow’s princes collected tribute on behalf of the khans, grew rich and powerful, and eventually positioned themselves as the “Third Rome”—a spiritual successor to Byzantium and Rome.
Yet this was not the original Russia. It was a new, Mongol-influenced power with centralized, autocratic rule and eastern-style governance. Meanwhile, Ukraine preserved the memory, culture, and geography of the original Kievan Rus’.
THUS, Putin is a representative of the Mongols.
While Kiev represent the true Russia, the one founded by the Vikings.

Given the timelines, Moscow’s later claim to the heritage of Kievan Rus’ is historically questionable. It can be seen as a kind of political imposture—a state that took the name and symbols of Rus’ without being its true heir. The real Russia, in cultural, spiritual, and historical terms, was born in Kiev.
Today, the echoes of that ancient divide still shape the geopolitics of Eastern Europe...
Personally I’m siding with the Kiev-Vikings and not with the Mongols governing Moscow.
