Ontario Premier Doug Ford said he had agreed to suspend a 25% surcharge on electricity imports into the U.S. after conversing with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick in the wake of President Donald Trump's threats to hike steel and aluminum tariffs on the nation by 50%.
In a statement issued with Lutnick and posted on X, Ford said he and Lutnick would now be meeting Thursday alongside the United States Trade Representative to discuss a renewal of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada free trade act ahead of Trump's self-imposed April 2 "reciprocal tariff deadline."
"In response, Ontario agreed to suspend its 25 per cent surcharge on exports of electricity to Michigan, New York and Minnesota," Ford said.
In subsequent remarks at the White House Tuesday afternoon, Trump said he was now looking at reducing tariffs on Canada. Asked if he would lower them, he said “probably so.”
"I’ll let you know" if 50% tariffs on Canada are going into effect, he said.

Carney “hasn’t got the cards”
That was fast.
Ha!
I was thinking that Trump should have slapped a 250% tariff on their electricity! Then get the army corps of engineers to run lines from south to north to supply those states with energy posthaste.
Boom!
Mic drop.
If it were me, I would severely delay all commercial border crossings
I’m sure Hochul and her daddy, Schumer, will send Trump a thank you note. lol
Canada is financially weak and in no position to out maneuver The United States in any matter involving a game of dare.
Other countries share this same wimpy financial vulnerability. We can outlast just about anything, one does suspect.
Ford is claiming that Lutnick has agreed to trade talks.
Both sides can claim victory, I guess.
Not unless us southern states get to call the shots. The blue states elect Dim prez's who impact our energy prices even in the red south. Obama's EPA made us shut down some of our coal plants and replace them with "clean burning" natural gas fueled plants (a process that cost beeellyuunnns of dollars). Then in Biden's first week he issued EO's making it hard to drill for natural gas, which made my natural gas bills go up as well as my power bills (and gasoline at the pump).
How long will it take Oh! Canada! to learn the meaning of the phrase “reciprocal tariffs?”
lol... I must admit I am surprised about this... My pessimism thru the years has grown quite large and when things like this happen, I am truly bewildered!!
I would place money on him getting a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia. Maybe then the EU weenies can quit blustering about nukes and how Putin is going to invade them.
I would say Ford “cracked” under pressure.
Yes. I know. It’s crazy. We need to reverse those policies and stick them with massive penalties if they try to shut them in the future eg pay off $100 billion in projected profits if any plant is forced to shutter by new regulators. That will stop them. I am in Cali we closed the nuclear plant and blew up several dams. We pay a fortune for electricity AND manufacturing industry pays massive penalties for using more than 199kwh. And they expect us to electrify the entire state!? More ridiculous, and this is the truth, we have so much solar production during the day 300 days a year that the utilities have to dump off the excess. But they’re permitted to charge us through the roof for using it. Makes no sense. They should be giving it away at a discount, during the day to promote manufacturing in the state. But nope. And meanwhile the state sues them every few years for wildfire damages and collects many billions in extortion fees. It’s completely maddening.
