BREAKING: 8.0-magnitude earthquake hits the Caribbean Sea - PTWC
I never read that one
201 Minutes of Space Idiocy yes
Definitely a thing to remember
We have wars and rumors of war
I’m certainly experiencing trials and tribulations (as usual, ouch) π€ π€ π€
BUT, trying to hang in there
God bless ππππππβοΈβοΈβοΈ
I wonder why Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands were advised 6 minutes later than everyone else? Just before 7 pm I heard a TV alert for PR saying a 7.6 quake. I was in a 7.5 in Mexico City in 1956. It lasted a minute. It felt like riding on the New York subway, swaying back and forth. Mexico City is built on a bed of mud, so the motion was different than land on hard rock and soil.
I also felt the Mineral, VA quake of 2011 which was 5.6 at Mineral, but only about 4.0 where I was. I was sitting on the edge of the bed when the walls began to shudder for about 15 seconds. There was some chimney damage in my neighborhood, although the DC National Cathederal and Washington MOnument had several $million in damage. Fun thought, the quake was near the North Anna Nuclear Plant that was built to a quake resistance of 6.0. Glad it was only 5.6, hmmm?
I kept a small bowl of water near my computer and several times I saw the water ripple, and in 10 minutes there would be a news report of an aftershock around 2.5. This went on for about 2 weeks.
When I hear the news last night near 7 pm, it was suggested that IF there was a tsunami, in would hit Puerto Rico at about a 3 foot height increase. I may call someone there today to hear if there is any news.
Actually Port Royal and Reelfoot Lake were very different. There was an interesting TV program yesterday regarding Port Royal, and from the description what happened was liquefaction of the sandy ground which slid into the sea, dropping about 15 or 20 feet, also a strong tsunami hit. Reelfoot Lake was a phenomenon caused during one of the great New Madrid quake in 1811-12. The worst 3 were around 8.?, and the lake was caused by a Graben Fault (if I remember what I read 30 years ago correctly). That is caused when there are two parallel cracks which spread and the area in the middle drops. In this case perhaps 20 feet and then fills up wat ground water. THe New Madrid quakes were another major area event. One of them caused a major quake in Caracas, Venezuela, which killed around 20,000 people.
I just hope the quake they had yesterday was the big one, and not the start of a series.
Tsunamis canβt surround an island and keep going? NO
Of just overwhelm Cuba and keep going? Not unless it is going to be a 2000 foot high Tsunamis. In which case we all are going to die.
If it hits Puerto Rico, guess who’ll be blamed.

Yeh, but, we were in Hawk Channel. About 20ft in most areas but we anchored behind an island in about 8ft of water. NOT really worried anyway.
