A federal appeals court ruled Thursday that a decades-old ban on federally licensed firearms dealers selling handguns to people aged 18, 19 and 20 is unconstitutional.
In a unanimous ruling, the three-judge panel on the New Orleans-based 5th US Circuit Court of Appeals slammed the Biden administration’s attempt to argue that the handgun ban was in line with the “nation’s historical tradition of firearm regulation” — a test for gun laws set by the Supreme Court’s landmark 2022 ruling in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association, Inc. v. Bruen.

“Ultimately, the text of the Second Amendment includes eighteen-to-twenty-year-old individuals among ‘the people’ whose right to keep and bear arms is protected,” the opinion authored by Judge Edith Jones stated.
“The federal government has presented scant evidence that eighteen-to-twenty-year-olds’ firearm rights during the founding-era were restricted in a similar manner to the contemporary federal handgun purchase ban, and its 19th century evidence ‘cannot provide much insight into the meaning of the Second Amendment when it contradicts earlier evidence,’” added Jones, nominated to the federal bench by President Ronald Reagan.
“We REVERSE the district court’s judgment and REMAND for further proceedings consistent with this opinion.”

What about the nation's historical traditions of a 2nd Amendment? We just gonna act like it don't exist?

I always thought that is a silly restriction. You can buy a 12 gauge shotgun or a 300 Win Mag rifle at 18, but not handguns! Far too dangerous.

I have a relative who’s clerking for a judge on the 5th Circuit. He/She (I’m not giving any hints) is so stoked.
I had often thought that if you are of military age 17,18 why the 2nd A didn’t apply to them?
A yearbook ad for a bank had my buddy and I appearing to run out of the vault with bags of cash. We were 17. Someone thought it would be fitting to have us carrying handguns. One guy went home and got two of his dad’s guns and returned. Yup, we were pictured masked faced and armed running out of the vault. Not one eyebrow was raised. That was 1969. Just a memory.
Many many people aged 18, 19 and 20have been disenfranchised of their Second Amendment rights over the years.
And at the same time, 18 year old me was handed a Beretta 9mm by Uncle Sam.
While I don’t dispute the constitution here. I should note that most homicides involving mass killings are by far done with handguns and not with rifles.
That said, what about mandatory lessons on gun use and safety in Highschool again?

What not seventeen year olds?
And suppressors ought to be looked at next. They aren’t even a weapon, do not enhance the performance of a weapon in any way. You should be able to purchase them at the grocery store.
