Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum addressed U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's renewed threats of steep tariffs this week, asserting that migrant caravans are no longer reaching the U.S.-Mexico border.
Her remarks underscored growing tensions as Trump plans to tighten immigration policies and impose a 25 percent tariff on Mexican imports. Trump declared that the tariffs would remain in place "until such time as Drugs, in particular Fentanyl, and all Illegal Aliens stop this Invasion of our Country!"
"Caravans of migrants no longer reach the border," Sheinbaum said on Tuesday while presenting a letter she plans to send to Trump in the coming days. She also emphasized Mexico's efforts to curb the flow of drugs, including the synthetic opioid fentanyl, while noting that it remains "a public health and consumption problem within your country's society."
Newsweek reached out to Trump's transition team for comment on Tuesday.
As Trump prepares for his second inauguration, his harsh rhetoric on migration has resurfaced, coinciding with a caravan of approximately 1,500 migrants from Central and South America heading toward the U.S. border before his proposed policies take effect.
The urgency is partly fueled by Trump's promise to dismantle measures such as the CBP One app, which currently allows migrants to schedule asylum appointments remotely. However, Sheinbaum reminded Trump that Mexico is not to blame for the caravans reaching the border.
"Maybe President Trump doesn't know this, but of those arriving at the border—which is significantly fewer, 75 percent less than in December 2023—half them have a CBP One appointment. In other words, they have an appointment. So, they [the U.S.] are the ones inviting them to come to the United States," she said.

Wow, that didn’t take long
Not president yet and already having huge impact!
Isn’t it amazing how they can stop this if they want to.
The president of Mexico has a point but Mexico has long perpetrated enough evil on Americans that it needs to be punished hard to learn a lesson. We need to make Mexico to absolutely fear crossing the U.S.
winning....not tired yet
Ask America why it can’t get many millions to stop taking drugs and making a super market for them.
Maybe if they knew that it was devastating their families too in the end, that would reach them.
And Mexico is a mess and we should have taken out their cartels a long time ago in any way needed.
But then the CIA would lose all the money it gets.
Why doesn’t the news media ask Biden why he didn’t demand this four years ago.
Biden would defer the question to his Obama team handler, who might stumble and say something about fundamentally transforming America.
But ... what the Bidenites have spent four years saying was impossible can apparently be done with the flip of a switch in Mexico City. Our enemies: foreign and domestic.
But did they stop it? or did the illegals simply scatter? Did they bus them to their former countries?
Deterrent affect doesn’t even require a decent president-elect to be seated.
More winning and Trump isn’t even in office yet.
Sheinbaum doesn’t seem to mind her own country being invaded from the south. I wonder what destruction these illegal aliens wreak in Mexico on their way to the U.S.?
As of November 2024, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reported a significant decrease in migrant encounters at the U.S.-Mexico border compared to the previous year. In October 2024, there were approximately 100,000 encounters, marking a 75 percent reduction from the same period in 2023.
All it takes is knowing what the policy is. Trump makes it clear, they stop coming.
This whole idiocy around ‘having to pass a Bill’ was nonsense...when you have a border patrol and a military, where it wasn’t happening before Joe.
Go, President Trump!
AMEN!.......................
I'd think its because they are in transit, possibly guarded/herded transit. NGOs provide food, transportation, medical care, shelter. The caravans only walk for public photo-op.
