Why should this involve the Pentagon at all, except for ensuring the mail is delivered?

When I was in the Air force, well before every election, I sent a post card to our town clerk in my home town and requested an absentee ballot. She mailed it to me, I voted and mailed it back.

Very simple.

If you are so ill informed or stupid you need the Pentagon to "educate" you or provide a ballot to you, maybe you are too stupid to vote.

I’m not sure how DOD has a direct responsibility since voting is an individual function that depends on where the service member is registered/qualified to vote. Way back in the Dark Ages, i.e. pre-internet, one of my additional duties as a junior officer was Voting Assistance Officer. JAG did the training & provided paperwork for a soldier to submit to request an absentee ballot from his registration. This was in USAREUR so long mailing time was a factor. I got my packet from my county election board in OK but my wife never received hers from a different county in OK.

Hope someone can tell me the role of the DOD in this matter today.
