Back in 2002, I took my family on that stretch of road for a class for medical missionaries. Real heartbreaking to see this happen. And really amazing.
We will have to wait 4 years while government mafia make Americans jump through environmental impact studies on the road repairs. God, but I hate grifting useless bureaucrats.
China would have already restored passage.
Imagine the cost if it was Boston, NYC, New Orleans, etc.
I’ve driven that road quite a few times in the past; very treacherous if you are not paying FULL attention. Also very beautiful.
We drove that stretch both ways in April of 2023 on a trip from Arizona to visit my wife’s family in NC. Beautiful scenery, glad I got to see it then.
This is a different area - Chimney Rock and Lake Lure - but Mark Hunnicutt does a para-glider fly over that really lets you see the full extent of the destruction:
He has other videos where he hikes up these same highways a few days after the hurricane. His videos are a real service to show the raw situation rather than the sanitized FEMA-approved clips that the media shows.
I-40 is one of the most important interstates in the country. Now you must detour up to I-81 near Independence, VA. Adds a lot of time and shipping cost.
Taking the kids to NC at Christmas and have to detour all the way up there.
Fortunately I have family in Virginia to visit on the way.
Unfortunately for truckers this is an enormous headache. This will have a large economic impact.
They’ll also need to make sure that all the quotas for the incompetent and disadvantaged are filled.
Looks like my former back yard...

Thanks for posting the video. I’ve never seen one kite fans they were using. I would be mortified to be up in one.
AMEN!!! This is REAL REPORTING! Can you imagine Jake Tapper or Kirsten Welker in this situation? The urine would have been spraying EVERYWHERE!
“treacherous??”
Maybe to someone who’s never been out of Kansas.
I would say treacherous at night, especially if you’re right in front of a trucker accustomed to driving it and you’re going the speed limit.
There are plenty of other road closures across Western North Carolina...
Does it look like your backyard?
Pretty much...after my home collapsed into the Nolichucky River in Erwin, TN...
