To me, that indicates that the regime is getting close to its last legs. A war with Israel would allow to be toppled in short order, because nobody would be there to keep the people in line and most Iranians are just waiting for the opportunity to topple it.
It’s my understanding that Christians may now be the majority population in Iran.

Nobody wants to admit they are Christian in Iran. It’s a death sentence to be Jewish or Christian in Iran.
However, in 2020, a million Iranians were secretly polled and admitted to being Christians. It has undoubtedly gone up from there in four years.
I can say for certain that almost all mosques are empty on a daily basis. They may state that the are Muslim, but their actions speak otherwise.
But strategic retreats are A-OK
That million is what people are admitting to in secret. Remove the regime and threat of death and it’s almost certain to be much greater than that.

I wonder how much pressure it would take to really get them to fold.
I wonder if on one side you have the students an all for liberalization and move to a more secular state always ready to take to the street and suffer those consequences.
IF you add that pressur on one side.
But then add pressure on the other side to launch an all out Jihad on Israel. Essentially a “put up or shut up and get out” you are not strong/ pius enough with similar public demonstrations..
I highly doubt that. Their theology has too much hate for Israel and Western civilization which keeps them motivated. Plus, their weaponry is increasing all the time, so I read.
After watching those Mullah crazies for years, I tend to believe they WILL use nukes once they perfect the delivery systems. People forget that their insane beliefes allow for such horrendous use as long as they die as Martyrs and join their god and Mohammed in paradise. Of course, the average Persian would prefer a peaceful Western culture, but the Mullahs control the military and nukes, if any.
Personally, I think it is past time for Israel to make an example of Iranian leadership, as they've been doing sporadically but on a bigger scale. But then you would have massive collateral losses, and Israel already gets shit from the World just for fighting Hamas who struck Israel first.
What's the answer? I'm not sure, but I lean towards complete annihilation of ALL Iranian leadership.

Iran has, maybe just now, realized that they don’t want unscripted warfare with Israel with no holds barred.
They have chickened out and are looking for reasons to delay, and ultimately find a plausible reason to change their collective mind.
Lest they have their collective asses handed to them.
