Has Zelensky altered the course of the war - or fatally poked the Russian bear? Experts reveal just what Ukraine hopes to achieve with Kursk offensive and whether it could prove a tactical masterstroke

Whether it could prove a tactical masterstroke

MailOnline examines the invasion so far and assesses what may come next

On Tuesday, August 6, around 1,000 brave Ukrainian soldiers supported by a few tanks launched what seemed like a reckless at best - and catastrophic at worst - incursion into Russia's Kursk region.

Within 48 hours of the first reports of the border breach, Russia's stonefaced army chief Valery Gerasimov - who reportedly dismissed intelligence reports indicating a Ukrainian troop buildup along the border two weeks prior - declared the invasion had been stopped in its tracks.

Now, one week later, not only have Kyiv's soldiers made a fool of Gerasimov, but AFU commander Oleksandr Syrskyi claims his troops have seized one square kilometre of territory for each soldier that poured across the border - and that the initial invasion force has been reinforced by thousands more troops backed by Western armour.

With the offensive still grinding on, a Ukrainian foreign ministry spokesperson declared today that 'as long as Putin continues the war, he will receive such responses from Ukraine'.

That defiant statement came hours after his president Volodymyr Zelensky told the world that 'war was coming home' to Russia and vowed to 'kill the Russian terrorists where they are and where they launch their strikes from'.

MailOnline spoke to several experts to examine the invasion so far, explain what its goals might be, and predict how long the valiant Ukrainian units tasked with launching the first invasion of Russia since World War II can hope to hold out.

Nothing in Russian history suggests anything remotely like this will occur.

Except of course, the whole war of the Soviet Union on Finland before and during WWII.

Finland lost territory, but they survived as an independent state.

Or, a more recent example, the war in Afghanistan.

Or the attempted invasion of Poland by the new Soviet Union in 1919-1921.

As trading material for negotiations, if Trump is elected in November, this makes perfect sense.

The chances the Russians will use tactical nukes just went up a few dozen times.

So Putin nukes himself ......

Brillant tactic, why stop at Kursk, should go on and nuke Moscow

No, there is not a single instance I am aware of where someone invaded Russia, that they surrendered, gave up land, or overthrew their leader.

Try to keep up.

“The Russians will not use nukes on their own territory or territory they hope to control.”

Are you saying they wouldn’t use nukes on their own territory for political reasons or operational tactical reasons.

I think it would be unwise politically to use tactical nukes but operational it could work splendidly well and end the battle instantly.

The blast area would not be like the Chernobyl disaster. The blast area will have much lower radiation levels and the levels will decay down quickly.

During the Desert Rock exercises between 1951 and 1957, the US Army conducted nuclear tests in the Nevada Proving Grounds where hundreds of soldiers would march and maneuver around the detonations.

They were able to function just fine as they didn’t drop over dead or experience short team problems. Some of the troops did experience long term problems years later but that was years later.

In a tactical situation (little nukes), the troops can function moving into the blast area right after the nuclear explosion. Of course, your situation would be grim if you happened to be in the blast area when the nuclear explosion occurs.

Nothing in Russian history suggests anything remotely like this will occur.

False Dmitry I was deposed in 1606. He was hacked to pieces, cremated, and his ashes were shot in a cannon toward Poland.

Typos are not the same as word salads. Only people with common sense would know that.

that Putin’s Russia jad mpt beem banned

I know people might not take the time to try to figure it out, but, checking the letters around the typo letters might have given them a clue...

thus... jad would become 'had'' and mpt would have become 'not' and... beem would have become 'been'

Contextually, even anyone with simple common sense would have interpreted the whole phrase without needing to have it interpreted for him.

You are so busy anxiously wanting to find the next Harris verbal gem to plagiarize, that you forget to engage your brain, whatever there is of it.

You have it ass backwards. He was a Catholic and a Pole. Installed in subterfuge. The rose of and spat him out, returning him to his sponsors. Russia has never been beaten by invasion. And they have never responded to an invasion by overthrowing their leader and installing a puppet of the enemy.

But thanks for playing.
