Democracy Docket ^ | July 25, 2024 | Crystal Hill

Massachusetts Sen. Edward Markey is renewing his push to expand the U.S. Supreme Court by adding four seats, less than a day after President Biden announced his support for reforming the high court.

Speaking in front of the Court building Thursday, the Democratic senator urged Congress to pass the Judiciary Act, a proposal that would create a 13-justice bench...

Biden Vows to Push Supreme Court Reform in Final Months in Office

https://www.theepochtimes.com/us/biden-vows-to-push-supreme-court-reform-in-final-months-in-office-5693442?utm_source=partner&utm_campaign=TheLibertyDaily

“Over the next six months, I’ll be focused on doing my job as president,” he said, highlighting key goals such as boosting economic growth, lowering inflation, ** tightening gun control, and safeguarding the planet from what he described as a “climate crisis.”**

While President Biden has resisted pressure from the progressive wing of the Democratic Party to adopt measures such as imposing term limits on Supreme Court justices or packing the high court with additional justices, he did create a commission to examine possible Supreme Court reforms, including ending lifetime appointments. Ultimately, the 34-member commission did not endorse adding seats to the high court and took a neutral stance on term limits.
Darry Allen Sragow, a Democratic political consultant, told Reuters he was surprised that President Biden mentioned Supreme Court reform in his Oval Office speech.

“In a sense, that came out of nowhere, he didn’t have to put that in the speech, but the fact that he mentioned that suggested to me that in his mind, for the future of the country, this has become a high priority and what he is presumably referring to is the recent decisions coming out of a Supreme Court that is dominated by very conservative justices,” Mr. Sragow said.

This is a renewal of a previous effort, because they view the court as 6-3 in favor of a “far-right fascist insurrection” of the court. Well, that’s the propaganda they sell. They are angling for this to take place after they sweep this cycle, if we fail to hold them back. These people only care about power, and they are willing to use any means necessary to achieve it, including psychological games. They are very adept at this game, and control the means of dissemination via their colleagues in the MSM and corrupt courts such as DC and NY.

I’ve always ignored the propaganda used by both sides, “this election is a fight for the soul of the nation.” You hear it every four years, it’s pathetic.

This time, I believe that message is true. Something radically changed during the “community organizer” Obama years. It is very dark.

If they get the chance (WH,Senate *and* House) they'll add 12 seats and fill them all with 40 year olds.

FDR tried this trick in the 1930s I believe but got pushback to his attempted power grab. Anyone know what the talking points were back then?

“I really do believe they’re going to attempt to cheat not only the election of 2024 but SCOTUS as well. We MUST make this election Too Big To Rig.”

Absolutely count on it... They are not going to stop now. They will indeed pull every scam they can.

By the way, it is good to see you out driving it for a change Sir rather than being hidden under the hood out of sight... Personal participation by real name in your own domain is both positive and productive. :)

We’re back to them being desperate to pack the SCOTUS.

Hell, I was extremely dissatisfied they denied standing for Murthy v Missouri and didn’t think they went far enough with a couple more rulings but simply rolling back some of the excesses of the Far Left Burger Court in the 70s and 80s is enough to put Democrats in meltdown mode.

Hopefully Trump gets to replace the Wide Latina with a rock ribbed Originalist along with 2 such replacements for Thomas and Alito.

Changing the number of justices doesn’t require a constitutional amendment. The number is not fixed.

However, ending lifetime appointment does require an amendment. Or an article 5 convention.

This is what democracy does for you. Democracy is a freight train that runs over the minority. Democracy enables fascism and placates abuse of power. There are no checks and balances. Democrats use lawfare and put their political rivals in prison. They will murder citizens for propaganda. They will use intimidation, threats and assassination to silence the minority.

Good post, FS. As you noted, the number of Supreme Court justices is set by Congress, and not by the Constitution. The Founders really dropped the ball on this one.

FDR tried to pack the court in 1937. Even his fellow Democrats found that unsavory, and FDR’s plan failed. Today’s Democrats are much, much more radical than those back then. If the Democrats can cheat their way to control of Congress, they will go for court-packing without hesitation.

Rather than an expansion of the court, we need an expansion of the House of Representatives. At the founding, we had 1 representative for every 35K citizens. Today it is about 1 per every 700K citizens. This waters down and weakens the control you have over the person that is supposed to represent you in Congress.

I would think 1 per 100K would be a good middle ground. This would increase the number of representatives from 435 to 3300. With that many congress people, additional parties supporting a number of different interests could spring up. They would be much harder to manipulate and bribe in blocks as they are today.

An added bonus would be that Washington DC wouldn’t be able to handle that many Representatives and they would have to spend the majority (if not all) of their time in their home districts with their constituents, hearing their gripes every day. In 2024, they could vote online, meet in committees online, etc.... They don’t need to physically be in the same room to do those things. If the Florida caucus wants to meet in person or if the midwest farmer caucus wants to meet in person, they could do that closer to where they live. They don’t have to travel to DC to do that.

And of course it goes without saying that the 17th amendment should be repealed so that the states would once again have representation in the government.

I agree with Markey. Add four Justices - right after Trump wins the presidency and the GOP takes the Senate.

Question: Isn’t it stupid to suggest it now? Trump’s ahead. He could do it when we’re in the majority. Then what?

Markey is old-80 in ‘26. Wikipedia says he’s running. Probably won’t but these people live for this.
