They were social workers it sounds like. The kid had a menial job at a nursing home. Odd for an above average student.

His sister is a Libertarian like the father. To me this would indicate a family that is very interested in politics.
There has been some talk on leftist sites pegging the shooter as an "apolitical" "school shooter" type, but having two members of the immediate family that are Libertarian, plus the Democratic mom, and him being a "registered Republican" leads me to think there was a lot of political discussion going on in this family.
