A long time ago I was researching genealogy and came upon some primary source material about the battles in the Trans Mississippi West. It was an eye opener to read what Civil War soldiers endured not just from battle but from the elements, flooding, heat and insects. Afterwards I fully understood mortality rates from disease over wounds.

I was reading a book once that took place in one of the infirmaries in the civil war. It’s amazing anybody survived the medical care, especially limb removal.
