Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) continued to defend his comments on the marriage rate during the Jim Crow era during a contentious conversation with MSNBC anchor Al Sharpton.
Donalds appeared on MSNBC’s PoliticsNation on Saturday after his event in Philadelphia earlier this week when he discussed how the black marriage rate was higher back then than it is now. His comments have come under fire by many on the Left, who have interpreted the remark to be about how Jim Crow laws benefitted black people at the time despite the fact that they kept them in segregation and prohibited them from voting. Sharpton offered Donalds another opportunity to respond to the backlash.
“My response is that it’s very interesting how people can just lie and mischaracterize what I said,” Donalds said.” I never said or insinuated anything about Jim Crow being better. Just was talking about the marriage rates of black families in America during that time period. It’s an empirical fact.”
“I mean to in any way infer that the families, black families were better in Jim Crow, I mean, I’ve said things that I later said I shouldn’t have said,” Sharpton said. “Can’t you own that even sanitizing Jim Crow, even if that wasn’t your intention, was to say that’s my intention, I’m sorry for using those words?”
“Well, first of all, I never sanitized Jim Crow. I was just talking about the era in which black marriage rates were higher than they were during the great society and every other point in American history,” Donalds responded.

NEVER BACK DOWN!! NEVER!
If they want to mischaracterize what you say there is nothing you can do about it.
It is pointless to apologize.
It would have been better to never mention Jim Crowe and just say the first half of the twentieth century, but you can’t unring a bell.
He basically apologized, but sharp, and wanted him to be his bitch.
al Sharpton is just another house....guy.
Oops.
But Sharpton wanted him to be his bitch.
The Left is always going to mischaracterize what you say so I disagree that something is better not said. That idea is what gives the Left the power to say what people may and may not say, and that is not free speech.
What Donalds and others are saying is that faith, discipline, hard work, dedication to family, and inner strength permit Americans — including black Americans — to thrive and advance even in hard times. In contrast, the message of Sharpton and the Democratic Party discourages and disables people by telling them that they are victims unable to help themselves.
I believe in saying what you mean & meaning what you say! If you can’t do that, stay out da television. I guess Byron needed some notoriety! No, Byron, you’re not the VP pick!
Maybe he was afraid his comments would incite a riot and a clothing store might get burned down.
Rev. Al Sharpton didn’t include anything about it in today’s Sunday morning church sermon to his church congregation. ⛪✝️🛐🕯️🕯️📙👨🏿⚖️
Oh, wait. There was no sermon. He has no congregation. He doesn’t serve a church.
He is a professional race baiting hustler.
If CEOs give him cash he refrains from calling in thousands outside the headquarters to chant in protest and boycotts for the CEO being a racist.💰💰
Never forget that Sharpton is a scumbag. He has always been a scumbag and he will always be a scumbag.
What show is he on every morning? Is it MSNBC? He sits there like a stump. And, they treat him like a stump (a token stump at that)! They act like he has no intellectual “gravitas!” So, they don’t call on the “Rev” to comment!
Figgers Sharpton would get involved.
I feel much the same way. I no way do I feel we should allow them to set the ground rules of discourse.
It gives them power they have amply shown they will abuse with no qualms.
Al Sharpton? Is that POS still alive??
Al Sharpton - Tawana Brawley Her name should be spoken immediately after someone says his.
Nor do I
However a politician does not have the option to just ignore the MSM commentator that misconstrues his meaning.
They should not apologize or gently amplify their real meaning.
It is perhaps time to forcefully counter attack against those that intentionally misrepresent what was said.
The best defense is often attack
but I will still say don’t foolishly give them an opening by using your words carelessly. Politicians don’t have that option either.
HAS SHARPTON EVER paid all his taxes-—how about the fines over the Brawley fiasco? ETC ETC
