Lots of people, including here on FR, don't know the difference either, even after they are informed in no uncertain terms. Memorial Day commemorates those who have literally died in the service of our country. Period. Full stop.

We veterans (yes, including those who were physically injured and/or emotionally traumatized) have our own day, Veterans Day. Those who are are currently serving have not yet given the ultimate sacrifice or not yet completed their time in honorably serving also have their own day, Armed Forces Day.

I don't wear any of my veterans gear on Memorial Day for this very reason. I honorably served, but I would never compare my sacrifice to those who gave ALL. It is a form of "stolen valor" in my eyes. I believe most veterans feel the same.
