NPR has suspended Uri Berliner, the senior editor who published a bombshell essay a week ago that claimed that the publicly funded outlet has “lost America’s trust” by approaching news stories with a left-wing bias.
NPR media writer David Folkenflik revealed on Tuesday that Berliner beginning on Friday was suspended for five days without pay. Folkenflik, who reviewed a copy of the letter from NPR brass, said that the company told the editor he had failed to secure its approval for outside work for other news outlets — a requirement of NPR journalists.
NPR called the letter a “final warning,” saying Berliner would be fired if he violated NPR’s policy again.
Neither NPR nor Berliner immediately responded to requests for comment.
Berliner is a dues-paying member of NPR’s newsroom union, but Folkenflik reported that the editor is not appealing the punishment.
Berliner, a Peabody Award-winning journalist who has worked at NPR for 25 years, called out journalistic blind spots around major news events, including the origins of COVID-19, the war in Gaza and the Hunter Biden laptop, in an essay published Tuesday on Bari Weiss’ online news site the Free Press.
The fallout from the essay sparked outrage from many of his colleagues. Late Monday afternoon, NPR chief news executive Edith Chapin announced to the newsroom that executive editor Eva Rodriguez would lead monthly meetings to review coverage.

that is one way to react to a bias claim, let the one differing opinion go.
Our tax dollars at work!
The Communists/Marxists at NPR can’t have their behavior uncovered.
Their constant attempt at indoctrination cannot be uncovered.
What a bunch of losers!
Hey commissars gonna commissar.
See something, say something?
You’ll only get into trouble.
did nazi that coming
Alles Klar, Herr Kommissar?
the party that pushes the value of diversity, wont allow any diversity of thought, opinion, or political views.
Liberals are always open to your opinion......along as yours agrees with theirs.
Berliner knew this was coming.
NPR’s response to Berliner’s letter was not unexpected - very little with Berliner’s comments on the lack of diverse, objective discussions regarding NPR news gathering and bias.
His letter was damning, so my guess is that NPR just decided to not contest the relevant facts.
It’s not just NPR. WAMU’s 1A has become increasingly biased in their Friday News Roundup shows. A shame as it used to be so much better.
no dissent
resistance is futile
Berliner wrote an editorial, he didn't get paid for it so he wasn't 'working' for another news outlet.
But like Trump, this is just an excuse to punish Berliner for the embarrassment he has caused NPR.
Show me the man…
This is how leftists take over organizations.
They play for keeps. They play hardball.
Republicans and conservatives play nice, and let other voices stay inside their realms of operation and power.
Democrats and leftists root out all forms of discent.
If NPR were privately owned, I wouldn’t care what they said. But they receive $ 500 million in our tax money annually and have 87 highly paid “executives” all of whom are registered Democrats. And the Republicans in Congress, who have some control over the purse strings, do nothing about it.
Looks to me like NPR first decided to punish Mr. Berliner, then looked for a way to get it done.
Maybe they should also count how many NPR pens he has in his desk. Because I’m sure he took at least one home without permission.
And to help out my friends at NPR, here’s a photo they can use to show what a thief Mr. Berliner is.
The issue was he did not get permission from NPR. I get that and it's not an unreasonable rule.
But there was no way that Berliner was going to get permission to publish that letter anywhere, especially at The Free Press. Bari Weiss is persona non grata in many liberal circles. The same for Tara Henley in Canada.
In the end, this will hurt NPR. I predict they will continue to lose listeners and not understand why.
Of course. Because liars always have to stifle truth-tellers. That’s how they survive scrutiny.
