If you’re worried about Idaho becoming too blue, don’t. “This is a red state,” said Secretary of State Phil McGrane. “No matter what you heard from someplace else, this is a Republican state, and I’m sorry for the Democrats in the room. Idaho is becoming redder. It’s just a fact.”
In a 30-minute speech to about 100 Coeur d’Alene Rotarians at The Coeur d’Alene Resort on Friday, McGrane offered voter registration numbers to back up his statement. He said that between 2004 and 2023, 118,639 voters from 49 states moved to Idaho. Of those, 77,089, 65%, registered as Republicans, while just 14,707, 12%, registered as Democrats, and 24,896, 21%, were unaffiliated.
“I’m not surprised to see Republicans are moving to Idaho," McCrane said. “I will say, I was shocked to see just how prevalent it was.”
The only state with more Democrats leaving and heading for Idaho was Vermont.
Idaho has a little more than one million registered voters. The majority, 583,961, or 59%, are Republicans. Only 125,503, or 13%, are Democrats, while 275,329, 28%, are unaffiliated, according to McGrane's charts and graphs. It’s been even more of a red wave of those moving to Kootenai County, with 71% registering as Republicans.
McGrane said when looking at Californians coming to Idaho, 29,510 registered as Republicans, while 3,940 registered as Democrats.
“Yes, it’s true," McCrane said. “The majority of people moving to Idaho are from California by leaps and bounds. Almost three times as many as any other location."

“You know it’s doomed when the city council starts talking about “Bike lanes” “Green spaces” and Roundabouts.”
LOL...reminds me of a scene in the first season of Yellowstone. A young boy, around 7, and his dad got an ice cream in town and are sitting on the park bench enjoying it. The boy asks his dad about why he hates Californians and other outsiders so much. Dad explains why in simple terms to his son and then ends with “...but they sure do make great ice cream.”
Especially at the commisioner mtgs, eh?
Ron Korn (neighbor) and Brian Domke are getting my votes. Can’t believe woodward is getting ANY support.
People moving out of CA and into ID are our sort that would fit in around here.
I would love to see a qualified, personable, reliably Conservative and preferably Veteran opponent to Simpson. That said, I think that while not perfect, Little is generally a good Conservative governor and worth keeping and supporting.
I’ve got to think there even the CA-origin “Republicans” tend to be left enough to cause CaliPornication. That happens here in WA in a conservative community. They seem to en bloc drive Teslas, put up solar even when it doesn’t make sense, big on forcing low-income housing on new apartment projects, etc.
What’s wrong with roundabouts? Unless you’re Clark Griswold in London.
Roundabouts are fine...as long as there are no cars around. The one near Costco in Idaho Falls is a perpetual accident waiting to happen. We have some in Chubbuck that are replacements for a 4-way stop. It's actually big enough to be safer than the old 4-way stop. There is a smaller one on Hiline near the I-86 undercrossing. That one is a regular source of accidents. Mostly people going through too fast and going through a chain link fence and over a wall.
Well, unfortunately, 3,940 of them did bring their insane policies with them. They’re like a rotten apple in a barrel of good apples; eventually you get more rotten apples. Those ‘few’ are like a Typhoid Mary, if you will.
Boise is blue.
