There was a time when I thought that schools were closed on election day in order for the schools to be used as polling places. Then I realized they were closed so that the teachers could go and campaign for Democrats. When I lived in Maryland, which was definitely going to vote Democrat, teachers used to go to nearby neighboring states to get out The Vote, etc.
