I believe Eritrea is some temperature of War with its neighbor Ethiopia currently. Has been off and on for some long time now.

Haile Sellassie ran Ethiopia for decades. He seems like he wasn’t a bad guy. The Eritreans were always fighting, I think they are Moslems. Selassie was Christian, and tried to shut down the open air slave markets that were extant well into the 1960s.
The Communists spent a lot of effort destabilizing the area. “The worse, the better” as is their philosophy.
