Circa 1975 I was a geology student and had a theory about cation substitution and crystal lattice dehydration of clays. My theory was totally wrong but I did discover a new phenomenon about step wise dehydration dependent on cation concentration. I spent many hours with a X Ray de fraction machine wearing a lead skirt. I did not publish but other researchers independently discovered the same and did publish and deserve 100% credit.

My point is if I had of falsified any data to uphold my original hypothesis that I proved wrong would have gotten me thrown out of school. This standard no longer exists.
