(NEXSTAR) — Panera Bread is facing another lawsuit after one of their drinks, Charged Lemonade, allegedly caused a second customer’s death.
According to court documents filed in Delaware and obtained by multiple outlets, the family of 46-year-old Dennis Brown of Fleming Island, Florida is suing Panera Bread over Brown’s October death. Brown’s family says the man drank three of the Charged Lemonades after finishing a work shift at Publix on October 9.
Brown — who had “a chromosomal deficiency disorder, developmental delay, and ADHD,” as well as high blood pressure, according to his family — did not drink energy drinks. He did, however, enjoy lemonade, and had ordered a Charged Lemonade from Panera multiple times before his death, according to the lawsuit.

HOWEVER, I limit that to once every 3 weeks, at maximum. These drinks have an effect, so moderation seems… ah… whatever word implies "halfway between 'prudent' and 'necessary'".
where’s there’s money, there’s a lawsuit
I went into a Panera Bread a few months back and seen that crap. Pass, when you have HBP and or Afib, that kind of shit needs to be well marked or not accessible to the public.
As for Panera, it was like walking into a liberal nest. Whole atmosphere was off, gave me the willies.
I knew a couple whose son died after drinking an “energy” drink. He had no prior health problems.
It seems the first person, a young woman, had a congenital problem as well, one which caused her to be careful of caffeine. I wonder if they both had the same problem?
Anyway, that level of caffeine should definitely be very clear. I would be shaking like a leaf if I drank one if those!
Drink | Caff./fl. oz. | Sugg. serv. | Caffeine per serv. |
---|---|---|---|
(small) Red Bull | 9.5 mg | 8.4 oz. | 80 mg. |
Diet Coke | 3.8 mg | 12 oz. | 46 mg. |
Regular Coke | 2.8 mg | 12 oz. | 34 mg. |
McDonald's Medium Coffee | 9.1 mg | 16 oz. | 145 mg. |
Panera Charged Lemonade | 7.9 mg | 20 oz. | 157 mg. |
OK, so while 7X caffeine compared to Red Bull sounds excessive, this Panera drink ranks about the same as a large (20+ oz.) McDonald's coffee!
(One thing to remember about Red Bull: it's effect doesn't just come from caffeine, it has Taurine (an amino acid) and B-group vitamins. I'm cautious about how those intermingle.)
I think I’ll just stick to Green Tea.
Corporations are putting / sneaking caffeine into foods to manipulate the consumer to liking their food better. Food Theory on You-Tube had an episode on that.
Corporations want you dead.
Yep.
Which could very well cause serious adverse reactions in certain people.
The important thing I see there is that their “charged lemonade” has a lower caffeine concentration than coffee.
I always thought coffee has other compounds that mitigate the effects of caffeine compared to other foods and beverages.
I don’t know either way ... in any case, if I wish to ingest caffeine, I prefer to do so via coffee or tea which contain in naturally.
#5 I get the willies walking into Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s.... : )
Because dead people can buy more of their products?
They just squeeze everything out of them first.
The rest of the week I do a 34oz mug of Folgers.
It isn't the caffeine... It's what else you have wrong with you that might cause you to kick it.
Kid in the lead story sounded like someone with some developmental disorders as well as a heart condition. If he was that stupid, literally speaking and no insult intended, he probably should have had a chaperone.
Sad he died, but why is that Panera's fault?
