U.S. Steel issued layoff warnings to 1,000 employees of its Granite City, Illinois, mill this week, saying they expect to fire 60% of them due to indefinite idling of iron and steelmaking operations at the facility.
The warnings rocked the local community, which will be severely impacted by the move.
"You’ve got these small businesses that depend on that income to come in, and these businesses want these people to come in and spend their money," Edith Arnold, a woman whose relative has worked at the mill for more than 30 years, told local KTVI. "You shut them down, what are they going to do?"

The US still has steel mills? I thought all that work went to China and India years and years ago.
I, likewise, am astounded that US Steel is even still in business.
Illinois = a dump.
I thank God I left Illinois over 20 years ago. Yes, Oklahoma has a lot of poor folks, a lot of undereducated folks, and a lot of meth (is there anywhere that doesn’t?). But for the most part, it beats Illinois hands down, because it’s free from most the lefty loonies, and we are allowed to arm and defend ourselves.
For you data hounds out there—the all time daily closing high for US Steel stock was 167.93 on June 25, 2008.
It never recovered from the great crash of 2008-2009 and today a share is worth thirty five bucks.
I suspect this is a casuality of Obama’s ongoing war against coal.
People in IL are so ill that they repeatedly vote for policies that ruin many of them.
Un-possible. The economy is on fire. Demand for steel must be at an all time high.
This should equalize the income disparity with the folks in nearby East St. Louis…
Madison County, where Granite City is located, went for Trump 55-42 in 2020.

Most of Illinois is about as RED as it can get.
A few densely populated areas, Chicago being the worst, ruin it for everyone else.
Biden will disparage the greedy corporations and their quest for profits!
Adding Chicago would kill any good state.
“Most of Illinois is about as RED as it can get.”
Yep. Pritzker only won 7 counties. The rest of Illinois is as red as anywhere in the country.

Best economy ever! Isn’t everyone excited about Bidenomics and what it has done for (to) our nation? Aren’t you looking forward to five more years of the same?
Happy Days are here again!!!!
I know of five steel mills in Alabama that have shut down. If the issue is labor cost, they are more than welcome to come back to Alabama. Cost of living here is fairly inexpensive. A steel workers salary could provide a pretty good living here.
I remember when scrap was 300+ a ton..
now it’s a fight to get 100 a ton here in Minnesota.
scrap is down, that means demand for “new” (made from old) steel is down too.
Bidenomics baby!
Manchin challenges EPA's new metallurgical coal rules, warns it will harm W.Va.
Take a look at the Illinois map. It’s a red state. Two or three big cities do all the deciding.
