Hard-to-eradicate swine exploding in Canada and threatening to spill south of the border: expert
An exploding population of hard-to-eradicate "super pigs" in Canada is threatening to spill south of the border, and northern states like Minnesota, North Dakota and Montana are taking steps to stop the invasion.
In Canada, the wild pigs roaming Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba pose a new threat.
Ryan Brook, a professor at the University of Saskatchewan and one of Canada's leading authorities on the problem, calls feral swine, "the most invasive animal on the planet" and "an ecological train wreck."
They are often crossbreeds that combine the survival skills of wild Eurasian boar with the size and high fertility of domestic swine to create what Brook describes as a "superpig" that's spreading out of control.
Pigs are not native to North America.
While they've roamed parts of the continent for centuries, Canada's problem dates back only to the 1980s when it encouraged farmers to raise wild boar, Brook said.
The market collapsed after peaking in 2001 and some frustrated farmers simply cut their fences, setting the animals free.
It turned out that the pigs were very good at surviving Canadian winters.
Smart, adaptable and furry, they eat anything, including crops and wildlife. They tear up land when they root for bugs and crops.
Bagged an emu back in the 90s. Not bad.
They ‘cook’ out fine. You’ve never harvested one. I’ve had over 300.
Not a game animal in Texas, don’t even need a license. Like elk, bear and goat.

Wherever they came from, they are there now. That is the issue. I doubt the poster deserves an iota of blame.
Southern states have a serious wild hog problem & HAVE HAD for some time.
People get paid good money to take them OUT—Dead or Alive. Meat is given to the poor people in the area. B B Q !!!

The fact that you can hunt them makes them a game animal. If the government wanted to,it could require a license. Because hunting is a sport or game of sorts.
LOL! Suppressors are a joke! Been watching too many movies. If you knew anything about hogs, you would’ve abstained from that remark. A far more productive method is pneumatic rifles, and IR and/or thermal scopes.
Texas is over 75% private land. Hogs cost over 300 million in damage per year. Not a game animal. No license or tag required.
Bah! Simply cook them at higher temps to kill the parasites. You should be doing this even for corporation-farm hog products in the US. If you east sushi, these beauties are a cinch.
You apparently have no clue what a game animal is or hunting for that matter.

Whether an animal may or may not be hunted on private or public land, by the landowner or anyone else does not mean that it is or is not a game animal. If I want to shoot the squirrels in my yard, they are small game to me.

I guess hogs aren’t that high on the meat list. You’d
think that the fall of the year would be a good time to
do a little butchering, sausage/ham/chops making for the
winter months that are coming. Or at least that is how
our family did it.
Giant herds of wild boar, roaming the plains. The herds would go on for days. Then the White Man nearly wiped them all out.
Before we moved from the sticks, wife and I lived on wild hogs and beef.
When we moved to civilization, we bought some pork from the store. She literally puked unwrapping the pork loin. It did stink, but I could eat a meaunstrating polecat.
