My God, but you are dim. We have military assets in Europe because the USSR did and Russia does pose an immediate threat to our allies in Europe.
Do you know why NATO was created? It was created in 1949 in RESPONSE to the 1948 Soviet blockade of Berlin, which by agreement was under shared occupation by the French, The British, the Americans, and the Soviets, all of whom had their designated sector.
The Soviets’ blockade of Berlin cut off the other three sectors from the outside world, and the Soviets said that the other countries no longer had any rights or freedoms anywhere in Berlin (hence, the Berlin airlift).
What did the West do? It created NATO to defend against well-established Russian duplicity and aggression. (I bet you don’t even know that at the beginning of WWII the Russians were ALLIES of Nazi Germany.)
