My ISDN terminal carried 2 phone numbers. One was the original house dialup and the 2nd was a couple counts up. The 2nd one was unlisted and was helpful when I needed to call my wife after the CWA shop steward had my primary (listed) number "disconnected" at the office. His way of getting back at me for flipping a switch on my 212A modem to prevent remote digital loopback.
I moved to DSL just before moving to Idaho. It really wasn't much better than the D channel on the ISDN at first. Before moving to Idaho, I pre-qualified some home locations vs best DSL line rates. When I was checking out my current house with the real estate agent in August 2000, I checked the house number and did a DSL qualification on it. Sold!
In Idaho, I had a small Cisco DSL device operating in bridge mode. I purchased a router so I could connect all the other devices in the house. A couple years later, I had a microwave terminal on the roof with 1 Mbps symmetric service. In May 2019, the 1 Gbps symmetric fiber arrived. I put CAT6 all over the house. Real throughput to a Windows 10 box via my router and one switch is 980 Mbps symmetric to the speed test. A huge improvement over where we started in December 2000.
