Was one of the top healthcare and health research centers in the country; massive numbers and types of educational institutions and museums; a great great town for foodies (either for dining out or for market shopping); fantastic all-city festivals; a patchwork quilt of old-time ethnic neighborhoods where others could come to taste the speciality cuisines or attend the church bazaars; great sports venues and events; hundreds of historic establishments from one of the oldest cities in the country; every kind of high-culture community such as for opera, ballet, horticulture, crafts, on and on; and formerly a very friendly populace who lived the motto, "city of brotherly love."
In ruins.
OMG, Albion, you have reminded me of the wonderful picture of a beautiful (once) city that brings tears to the eyes.
I had a request from a great-niece to write about life in my youth. So I told of growing up in Philly. The Earle Theater that featured live bands and first run movies. The Mastbaum Theater which was a magnificent structure. So, so many memories. All gone.
The niece received a 96 for the paper and I was disappointed about those 4 points. only kidding.
Your recollections are so good. She probably would have received 100 .
As Bob Hope would say “Thanks for the memories.”
