My uncle kept a radio, capable of receiving short wave, in the garden behind bricks. This was extremely illegal, per the Japanese occupation authorities.
He would listen to the signals he managed to receive, and passed on any information. Back in the house they kept a set of maps behind a painted panel, and the family would gather for updates, placing tacks to mark changes in the lines. I understand there was much rejoicing when the Allies took Rome and Paris. In the Pacific it did not update so much.
The radio and the maps were lost when the Japs burned down the house and the neighborhood.
