So does a peephole. Either system permits one to assess the risk of opening the door to a stranger. The camera just makes the process safer and gives the occupant more time to have a loaded welcoming committee in hand.

Perhaps, sometime in the near future, we will all want some sort of technology that enables us to perceive a threat to our safety before it’s upon us.

“Lives in Portland, Oregon.” There’s the problem. Everybody who lives in Portland is wired and weird. I’ll stick with my cameras. We’re like the Bidenskyyyy Crime Family. Burglars, porch pirates and all other lowlifes don’t **** with those who have cameras.

“...there’s no evidence that more video surveillance footage keeps communities safer.”

Evidence is only evidence if you are willing to LOOK at it. Denial of fact does not make the fact go away.

Now, listen, I perhaps more than most, despise the idea of all of us being under video surveillance at all times. But the presence of that surveillance equipment does cause a modification of behavior among those who are being observed.

If only to bust or disable the cameras. But more than that, there is a record of faces and actions that occur at that point to which the camera is aimed, and not everybody wants some actions to be on record.

“Ring cameras stink for the tech value proposition, not these feature attempts. There are far better choices and camera ecosystems out there for less, with higher quality. Ring is analogous to AOL.”

Ok, I’m interested!

Care to share your thoughts on the better alternatives - publicly or privately?

What do they mean. Only white people rob houses, at least in all of those home security commercials.

I’d like to know as well. And frankly remote is a less desirable, albeit currently the primary option, as hard wired is safer and healthier as well. I don’t prefer wifi on all night. But out of what’s currently available, what options does everyone prefer for safety AND modicum of privacy?

The writer appears to be one 'protected class' who lives in Portland Oregon.
Interesting !

According to all the security camera commercials and videos, the answer to your question is an emphatic YES!

About a year ago, a neighbor asked if I could review my security footage that shows her mailbox and driveway. She was missing a package that said it was delivered. We found where it was delivered, to her mailbox, but it was not USPS who put it in there. It was a third party delivery person. Well, the dunderhead delivery person should’ve brought it to her garage or front porch, but was too lazy. When the mailman came and saw a package in there that didn’t belong, he took it out and it went to the post office where they sent it back to the sender. So she called the sender, and this time instead of using a lesser known third party, they sent it UPS, and the package was delivered to her front door. It was such a hassle to my neighbor, but at least she eventually got her purchase. So security cameras catch more than criminals. They can help figure out what’s going on with package deliveries.

“If a crime has been committed, law enforcement should obtain a warrant to access civilian video footage.”

Why wouldn’t I want the police to view a possible crime at my house?

We have 7, and except for 2 of them, use them almost exclusively to monitor our elderly cats whereabouts when we go out of town. They focus on their food area, the litter box, and the hall they traverse to to get from one room to the others to sleep in. This woman is an idiot. There are many reasons to have security cameras around. Her article makes me want to go get a few more.
