That is a feature and not a bug. The Biden admin has done all they can to limit offensive fire power in the military aid given to Ukraine because they want a frozen conflict and back to business as almost usual with their American patriot hating partners in Moscow. They even gave tanks after Europe and still haven’t delivered a single one.
Yep, Western Officials had expectations that many more Ukrainians would be killed rather than taken prisoner.

Being over 90, my military experience is pretty old fashioned but I can’t imagine any military offensive with or without armor succeeding without substantial covering fire. Without an effective artillery and air component the results will be exactly what Ukraine experienced.
