"If the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) - the United Nations body which regulates shipping - taxed carbon emissions, it would encourage shippers to go green faster."

perhaps $100 billion a year, to poorer countries to help them cope with climate change Minus various "administrative overhead" wealth transfer fees totaling about 90%. That is what they really have their eyes on. The "poor" shtick is just a virtue signal wrapper to make the total crap sandwich go down.
What are the total carbon emissions of the expanding bureaucratic empires around the world, including their employees and other grifters? How energy efficient are they, turning energy consumption into what exactly? If Elon Musk laid off 70% of them, would the climate change? Who, besides the grifters, would even notice them missing?

It is not shipping that will cost more. It is government that will be costing more. The “narrative” is spun to hide the grift of government. For the children. For the whales. For the climate. But in reality FOR US!

Shipping companies will just pass the cost off to their customers and nothing will change.
Only the MSM would be stupid enough to think this is a good idea.

Ocean shipping is way greener (and cheaper) than any other form of shipping. But, yeah, let them tax it. China will be affected the most.

By building them coal plants to raise their standard of living.Dream on. Most likely by enabling the UN compliant dictators add a few more cars or private aircraft to their fleets.

I am looking forward to all those LARGE TOW VEHICLES that rescue truck/trailer units that have crashed.
Watch TV show called HIGHWAY THRU HELL to see what I am talking about.
A semi trailer can be carrying a payload of upwards of 60,000 pounds-—PLUS weight of trailer—plus weight of truck cab.

I get your point. But redraw that map to scale. Each one of those "dots" would be invisible to the naked eye.
