Very stupid by Ukraine. This will give Putin a talking point that is actually true. That Russia is being invaded.
I understand that Russia deserves it but strategy is important. Drive Russian troops out of Ukraine if possible but attacking across the border into Russia itself opens up a new Pandora’s Box that will make a Ukrainian victory much more difficult.
Your points are valid but i’m not sure there is an actual possibility of a Ukraine victory or what one would even look like at this point. Can the invading Russians be appeased to continue invading in a less war-like manner by anything the Ukes do with their forces? we haven’t seen a real game-changing wrinkle to this war yet. I reckon we will know it when it happens.
The Legion of Freedom is made up of Russians who live in Ukraine and some that live in Russia - the Ukraine government has nothing to do with this group. Like many Russians, they hate the Russian Federal Government and have been committing acts of sabotage all across Russia for over a year.
Its quite possible the Ukraine government wishes they did not exist.
After a year of Ukrainian suffering therevis no reason why Russians should get to sleep soundly at night. Besides, the obvious target here is Belgorad and it is a legitimate military objective.

Depends on the Russian’s reaction: it’s a profound embarrassment if Russia loses even a small town to Ukraine. If this causes the Russians to move troops away from Donetsk to counter any Ukrainian move into Russia the payoff for the Ukrainians may be large.
