High-stakes talks over raising the debit limit abruptly came to a halt Friday on Capitol Hill, after Republican negotiators walked out of the room and blamed the White House for holding up discussions.
“Until people are willing to have reasonable conversations about how you can actually move forward and do the right thing, then we’re not gonna sit here and talk to ourselves,” Rep. Garret Graves, R-La., told reporters.
“We decided to press pause because it’s just not productive,” he added. Graves said he did not know if talks would resume this weekend.
Financial markets dipped on the news, which came after a positive week of talks that appeared to signal a deal was close.
One of the toughest sticking points in the talks has been the question of spending caps, a key GOP demand but a red line for a significant bloc of Democrats.
As the White House presses for a debt limit hike that would push the next deadline past the 2024 presidential election, Republicans are insisting on a spending cap for next year that goes beyond a freeze on the current topline number, and actually rolls government spending back to 2022 levels.
“Look, we can’t be spending more money next year,” House Speaker Kevin McCarthy told reporters Friday after the talks broke down. “We have to spend less than we spent the year before. It’s pretty easy.”
Each side’s demands may sound simple, but holding their respective caucuses together has become more difficult this week for party leaders — not less — as opposition to any compromise has grown among blocs of conservative Republicans and progressive Democrats

Traitorcrats are never reasonable.
Well GOP will get it through the house. And the Rats only need about 10 people to go along with the GOP in the senate.
You forgot about the 2/3rds veto override.
The republicans NEED TO GET their talking points in order when the screaming starts over the government shut down!! They NEED to explain immediately that it is just the parks and NON ESSENTIAL government (which should be ALL) the whole damn thing is NON ESSENTIAL!!!
If they ever think they will have "reasonable" conversations they are delusional. Stop pretending it will ever happen.
We no have the house. That’s where the spending starts. Cut. Then dump it on the senate.
That’s what republicans get voted to do.
Never fear, they will cave as always. Mark my word.
A more accurate Title-—”Republicans meet with Joseph Stalin....talks come to screeching halt-—says Pravda”.
I agree. They should have had the talking points already planned and out there immediately, now the dems will control the narrative.

.
So everyone knows the issue:
GOP wants “government spending back to 2022 levels.”
wanna bet they sign anyway?
Well, whenever there have been government shutdowns in the past, the Republicans are always blamed. They will be blamed this time as well, if it happens.
I didn’t see in the article where NBC mentions that the Republicans already passed a bill raising the debt limit.
” the whole damn thing is NON ESSENTIAL!!!”
About half the country lives off the federal teat.
That is a problem.
The Republican Party needs to get the percentage under 50% to survive.
The Republican Party has no choice but to hold firm in getting some recipients back into the work force.
The Democrats have to understand we will not permit them to buy the 2024 election.
The Democrats have to understand that if the welfare spigot runs dry starting in June that Democrat voters are primarily the ones who will be impacted. Republican voters tend to be self-reliant.
“One of the toughest sticking points in the talks has been the question of spending caps”
I’m not a great fan of across-the-board 1% increases.
Some things need to get cut 100%, others 50% [EPA?], and some not at all, and some things need to go above 3%.
Chuck should compile a list and so should McConnell. And fast.
And this is why people should plan for these things.
A little bit of gold will go a long way in the next few weeks.
Defensive positions in stocks and mutual funds will pay off.
Getting rid of debt and living below your means is always a good idea.
But, these are things that should have been done already. If you are “reacting” to the news, you will lose every time.
Not one thing they can agree to negotiate?
