When Vladimir Putin takes to the stage on Tuesday to commemorate the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany, his speech on Red Square will have been preceded by a turbulent week in which drones attacked the Kremlin and one of his top war leaders threatened mutiny.
The dramatic footage early last Wednesday of two drones flying over the walls of the Kremlin, its historical seat of power, exposed vulnerabilities in the heart of the Russian capital, putting Moscow on edge.
The authorities have banned the use of drones and started jamming GPS signals, leading to taxis appearing to be in the Moscow River on ride-hailing apps. Binoculars have hastily been handed out to police to spot incoming drones.
“There is a nervousness that I have never seen before,” said one official at the Moscow mayor’s office. “But Victory Day has to go ahead, there is no other option,” he added, speaking on conditions of anonymity.
Tellingly, on Friday, Putin took the unusual step to discuss the preparations for the 9 May Victory Day parade in a meeting with his security council, composed of Russia’s top state officials and heads of defence and security agencies.
Even before the drone attack on the Kremlin, there were signs of unease among the Russian leadership over the celebrations amid fears of Ukrainian strikes.
At least six Russian regions had scrapped the celebrations, with one region 400 miles from the border being the latest to cancel.

My non-support of Ukraine and NATO doesn’t make me a Putin supporter or apologist.
If you only see black and white, I hope you never get in a position to make decisions that impact others.
Well, if we had never gotten involved in Ukraine, beginning with the Obama-Hillary-State Dept. led Color Revolution that killed over 100 Ukraininans & created the puppet government so Washington hacks can get filthy rich to begin with in 2014, then there wouldn’t be any gray areas or nuance to worry about now.
Russian Flag with ‘John 3:16’ on It !
Cool.
E-E-E: Because we were explicitly attacked and drawn into conflict and our objective was to crush the enemy.
alex_busek: If "D-Day" in June of 1944 was such a tremendous success, then why did the U.S. government continue funding the military?
E-E-E: See previous reply. Your analogy is ridiculous, by the way.
But you clearly and explicitly asserted, in this thread: If Russia is losing, then we (the U.S.) can stop aiding Ukraine. That was your logic! If A, then B.
I merely applied that same logic to a different military conflict: If Japan (or Germany) is losing, then it is no longer necessary to fight the Axis, i.e., then the U.S. can stop funding its military.
Conversely: If the West suddenly withdrew its aid to Ukraine, then Russia would then suddenly no longer be losing, necessitating our then re-starting aid.
The course of action you are recommending would result in a pointless back-and-forth à la: 1. Russia loses a battle. 2. The West withdraws aid. 3. Russia then starts winning battles. 4. The West has to re-start aid. 5. Russia then starts losing battles again. 6. Rinse and repeat.
I see no benefit to that - indeed, it would only unnecessarily prolong the conflict.
Regards,
You are comparing two entirely different scenarios. It is an absurd comparison.
Ri-ight! If the U.S. would just keep its hands to itself, and leave the field to the Russians and the Chinese to exploit, then there would be NO gray areas.
Russia and China are model states, after all! We should emulate them, ri-ight?
Regards,
When Country "A" is losing, then Country "B" no longer needs any aid.
That was the syllogism you posited.
Regards,
While I agree with your 2014 statement. I’m sure there would be other gray areas to deal with.
Say what you will but you don’t need a glass bottom boat to see our best ships.
Do the Russkies ever acknowledge all the aid we gave them in WW2?
No. They don’t. And they never paid back a dime of any of it.
Go to You Tube and see numerous videos on the state of the Chinese military.
China’s military makes the Russians look superior by contrast.
