Russia’s top security agency arrested an American reporter for the Wall Street Journal on espionage charges, the first time a U.S. correspondent was put behind bars on spying accusations since the Cold War. The newspaper denied the allegations against Evan Gershkovich.

The Federal Security Service said Thursday that Gershkovich was detained in the Ural Mountains city of Yekaterinburg while allegedly trying to obtain classified information.

The FSB, which is the top successor agency to the Soviet-era KGB, alleged that Gershkovich “was acting on the U.S. orders to collect information about the activities of one of the enterprises of the Russian military industrial complex that constitutes a state secret.”

I spent some time in Perm, next door to Ekaterinburg and the place was awash with all sorts of secret/military-related activities. Every cab driver/doorman/"guide" wanted to talk about the activities there (or if they were female, suddenly found me boundlessly attractive) but if you were at all bright you brushed them off and loudly insisted that you weren't interested: they were all obviously KGB agents and were waiting for you to slip up.

This poor guy probably got set up.

Can we send ABC / NBC / CBS “journo-listers” over to Russia too please? They’ve all earned a stint at the luxurious gulags.

"The FSB,..., alleged that Gershkovich “was acting on the U.S. orders to collect information about the activities of one of the enterprises of the Russian military industrial complex that constitutes a state secret.”

As entangled and inbred as the government and the national media are...this could very well be true. At any rate, as it's a NYT reporter...see you in 20 years, comrade.

Putin knows the chump Biden will make a trade for one of his top spies or arms dealer.

Biden is the fish that keeps biting no matter how many times you toss it back.

Look at the first name. That is not Slavic. Plenty of people have Slavic names in this country. Citizens, including half of my family.

The Kremlin’s big-government (neo-Soviet system) in Russia is arresting any journalist who isn’t pro-Kremlin, no matter for which media he is working for. So nothing new here.
