“Several casualties” are confirmed after two helicopters with the 101st Airborne Division crashed in southwestern Kentucky, the Army said without immediately disclosing how many Air Assault crewmembers were killed or injured.

Two HH-60 Blackhawk helicopters crashed around 10 p.m. Wednesday in Trigg County near the Tennessee border, officials at nearby Fort Campbell said.

“The status of the crew members are unknown at this time,” the statement on the base’s Facebook page reads. Crewmembers were flying “during a routine training mission when the incident occurred.”

“We’ve got some tough news out of Fort Campbell, with early reports of a helicopter crash and fatalities are expected,” Beshear said on Twitter. “Please pray for all those affected.”

Night flying without position lights always has repercussions.

Especially in the modern warfighting environment, training to go to war is inherently dangerous.

If memory serves, this is the worst non-combat aircraft incident involving the 101st since 1988 when two UH-60 Blackhawks from different battalions collided while both were conducting night vision goggle training, killing 17.

It certainly will if they fly into combat with position lights on.

“Train as you fight, fight as you train”

I live within spitting distance of the Sabre heliport and you hear them flying overheard without lights plenty of times but they do go through intensive flight time with their lights on.
Usually when I’m trying to fall asleep.

My Nephew flew Blackhawks and his Wife flies Chinooks. He’s flying 777s now, thank goodness. He did three tours in the Sandbox. Terribly proud of both of them.

Our son is stationed at Fort Campbell. I’ll tell him to keep it down ;-)

Tell them both thank you. Mr. Wwwf served 15 Years in National Guard artillery.

My one nephew was F14 Navy pilot. Other nephew was Army and did 4 tours in sand. First in Iraq last 2 in Afghanistan. Yes he’s po’d bigly about humiliating withdrawal. Can’t repeat what he says.

God bless all service women and men.

Hahaha.

I’ve heard it nearly my whole life. It’s like a security blanket.

Now if we’re talking about the “booms” in the early morning....
