New VA Mission Statement recognizes sacred commitment to all Veterans, their families, caregivers and survivors

On Thursday, VA announced an updated version of its 1959 mission statement:

“To fulfill President Lincoln’s promise to care for those who have served in our nation’s military and for their families, caregivers, and survivors.”

The new mission statement is inclusive of all those who have served in our nation’s military—including women Veterans—as well as Veteran families, caregivers, and survivors. VA currently serves more than 600,000 women Veterans, the fastest growing cohort of Veterans. VA also serves more than 50,000 Veteran caregivers, more than 600,000 Veteran survivors, and millions of Veterans who did not serve in combat.

OLD VA MOTTO:

"...to care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow, and his orphan..."

From Lincoln's 2nd Inaugural Address

I'm glad that the VA has corrected all those minor problems like mounting backlog, and is correcting this most major and pressing problem.

Most vets I know have very little good to say about VA health care. As for me, I have excellent insurance and don’t have to put up with all the BS. Even today you are required to be masked when at the VA.

Took 26 years for the VA to get my back problems right, took 7 years to get before a BVA Judge and win a tinnitus case and that was after 5 years of arguing before requesting a BVA hearing... 12 years total. Even the judge said it was obvious.

The VA sucks at best. Their goal is if they defer and deny long enough they hope you die.

There’s well over 600,000 backlog cases. You can get on the VA.GOZ website and get the details.

We’re getting too much like the rats. What do we owe our vets? Service connected disabilities?-yes. Take care of them.

Too many go into the military with their own problems and come out worse. Blame the military? No way. We’re just trying to stay one step ahead of the democrats. Too many homeless vets in trouble need a kick in the rear. Let me be the one to administer it. They give us all a bad name.

Now we got the military lowering the standards for enlistment. 70% of our youth don’t qualify. That’s pretty bad. Obesity, drug failures, criminal records. Just think what they’ll do to the overburdened VA system. The Army would take them but the Air Force won’t.

I've had great care at my VA clinic and hospital for the past 8 years I've been enrolled.

They have been a bit slower to schedule/get an appointment post-covid but they're improving.

I’m retired Navy. I never enrolled with the VA. I was shocked when I found out my (now) ex-wife’s father received all of his substantial medical care from the VA. He served 3 years in the Army during the Vietnam era, all state side. He was indigent because during his 40 year career as a practicing attorney he did save a dime or plan one iota for retirement. There is something wrong with people like that getting VA benefits, but that’s the way it is.

“There’s well over 600,000 backlog cases.”

The vast majority of those people are essentially “space available”.

All Priority Group One (50% or more service connected disability) get red carpet treatment...truly Platinum level care. The best the US medical system has to offer.

That’s the original intent of the VA system.

Everyone I know who uses the system is very happy with the level of care.

I’m calling shenanigans.

Just words. That’s all. A PR release.

Still can’t fire incompetent medical staff. Still, a hugely bloated bureaucracy that exists primarily to grow itself at the expense of all others.

Still gonna play the “you ain’t got no records!” any time you come forward with a complaint.

Still a structure set up to only truly serve the sick bay commandos that run to the medicals for every little ouch and booboo while on duty.

I’ve been using it for years in your supposed red carpet treatment platinum level care.... Takes forever to get an appointment and I would never use the main VA hospital here for anything because of the persistent known horror stories.

The local VA outpatient care in town here is fine and luckily I have great insurance that I keep to cover the wife. I do any needed care locally and send the info to the VA to ensure it’s documented.

Had my annual blood work done 3 times this year. It’s sent to the main VA hospital labs. After 2 different results at their labs I was asked to get it done at the local hospital. Doc said he was hoping for 2 out of 3 good results.

Took the VA 2 months to get me the results I downloaded from the hospital the next day.

I’m sure there’s some good VA hospitals but not here.

What is your Priority Level...what percentage of disability?

It matters greatly for what quality of care VA delivers.

As stated I’m group 1.

If the VA hospital has a piss poor rating your level of care is irrelevant anyway, your just first in line for bad care.

The regional hospital for me would be Atlanta VA. It’s consistently one of the worst VA centers in the nation. Thankfully it’s a couple hours away. I do everything through community care.
