Paris police have banned gatherings in the city’s spots in areas around important government sites in an effort to end protests against France's plan to raise the state pension age by two years without a vote.

"Due to serious risks of disturbances to public order and security … any gathering at Place de la Concorde and its surroundings as well as in the area of the Avenue des Champs-Elysées is prohibited," the police said, according to an AFP report. "People who try to gather there will be systematically evicted by the police."

French President Emmanuel Macron has decided to push through the new legislation, which would raise the age of retirement from 62 to 64, using Article 49.3 of the constitution, which allows him to pass a law without a parliamentary vote. His decision has proven deeply unpopular, prompting nationwide protests.

I wonder how many of these protesters voted for Macron over LePen.

Macron is making a bad choice of not waiting for legislative approval.

He should just let the system go broke if he can’t get legislative backing.

The French love to vent.

If they can’t vent, they might explode.

“systematically evicted”

Seems to be the ‘New New Thing’ for governments, the world over, to do to their populace. :(

He should just let the system go broke if he can’t get legislative backing.

That's the correct move. Which is what we're doing here in America. Macron may be making the right decisions but he is being a dictator.

The retirement age issue is bad enough but for him to unilaterally pass a law is tyranny.

Maybe we need to see a nation like France fall, before they’ll
get the message.

I’m on the protester’s side in this.

Our governments have gotten too big for their britches.

Interesting how war in Ukraine, mass immigration, crazy energy policies, high energy costs, etc... can’t cause a mass protest - but raising the pension age by two years can

The reign of terror was real and deadly. They executed people for simply being suspicious.
The amazing thing is..the French managed to hold off foreign incursions into country at the same time the whole affair was going on.

Then comes Napoleon and the mid life crisis when Napoleon 3 managed to get the country taken by the Prussians.

Only since WW2 has the French managed to get the shameful ID as a surrender country.
WW1 they were at the very end of their rope and managed to hold on.

Although I woudnt trust any of them right now, we owe them a debt of gratitude for our independence. And they owe us a debt of gratitude for theirs. Makes us even I guess.

Thanks for your comments on France, that's the tone I was shooting for in my more flippant post.

I noticed Frenchmen in government taking these measures against other Frenchmen, ... repeatedly.

Although I wouldn't trust any of them right now, we owe them a debt of gratitude for our independence. And they owe us a debt of gratitude for theirs. Makes us even I guess.

I agree, and I'm willing to stay out of it ... permanently.
