Cost of Bakhmut ‘meat grinder’ battle on Russian army revealed
The Telegraph ^ | 7 March 2023 | Roland Oliphant

Russia has lost an estimated five men for every Ukrainian soldier its forces have killed in the battle for Bakhmut, according to a Nato official.

Speaking to CNN on condition of anonymity, the official said that Nato intelligence showed that Russia’s losses in the assault on the eastern salt-mining town far outweighed Ukraine’s.

The official also said, however, that Ukraine’s losses defending the city were significant.

Russia’s use of costly wave attacks have prompted comparisons to the First World War and the commander of the mercenary forces leading the assault has described the battle as a “meat grinder” for Russian troops.

Russia has been assaulting Bakhut since August, in what has become the longest and costliest battle of the war.

Oil prices are not elevated. They are in a prewar range. Oil (petroleum) is the main Russian export, by far.

https://oilprice.com/

Natural Gas prices are not global, as piped gas is a local resource. The best global price is for LNG, production and sales of which spiked due to the restrictions of Russian deliveries (in various ways).

This is also back at prewar levels, again after spiking in 2022.

https://www.spglobal.com/commodityinsights/en/market-insights/latest-news/lng/021623-weakening-lng-prices-spur-renewed-spot-demand-in-south-asia

Note that Russian gas sales to China are not a substitute market vs sales to Europe, as the source of the gas in each case (Europe and China) is different, widely separated gas basins.

Waves and waves.

Never seen any video of that.

Never seen any video of thousands dead on the field.

Reads like a Big Brother press release about Oceania killing 5 to 1 of Eurasia's men. I'm half expecting Hate Week to become a thing. What a pile of crap!

Canada is an important part of our nuclear readiness. Our forces are combined. If Putin’s forces attempt to begin preparations for launches, our survivability is far ahead of Russia’s.

There are drone videos out there on Russian infantry advancing. You just have to look.

As for dead Russians, YouTube bans such videos. You may want to look in Telegram.

Well, I saw the video of the “Ghost of Kyiv” earlier in the war. I dont believe ANY video,

What I HAVE seen is video of Slavs, almost always in squad size or less, shooting out of trenches at Lord knows what. Almost never anything in platoon size engagement. The last Uke defender video I saw was just pathetic. Single plinker. They’d have me believe he was right up there with Chris Kyle.

I so LOVE the nice bright yellow, or green or blue arm and helmet tape that is worn on arms, helmets and chests over camo. Yeah...thats just fab. How are they gonna rack up massive russkie numbers if they cant keep from shooting themselves?

Really, the video out of Iraq and Afghan 10 years ago was much more believable.

Iraq and Afgh had embedded US video teams. And they arranged it with the US military. And there was very little “real” combat shown. You see much more in Ukraine, what with the drones.

In Ukraine the US is not in charge. All reporting is filtered through the Ukes or the Soviets, er, Russians.

That offense in this war spares the infantry with carefully prepped artillery fire.

My sense is that Putin is on very thin political ice. He is bogged down in Ukraine in a fight that was predicted to last three days. He has spent billions and lost huge numbers of people and material. Sooner or later his oligarchs are going to make a move on him.

The traditional way of prepping for an infantry advance is that used in the “100 days” offensive of late 1918, which broke the German front.

This was the “rolling barrage” technique, which has been consistently used for the last 100 years. It is meant to suppress enemy defenders while the infantry advances.

This is apparently not being used by the Russians. Instead they are using the Somme, 1916 approach of blasting the defenders until, they hope, they are killed or driven away. This is vastly wasteful and didn’t really kill off the defenders. Worse, it only allowed for very short advances.

As others have said, there is no honest source.

Most western journalists do not have the courage to actually go onto the battlefield, like journalists of yore.

Those that pretend to report from Ukraine only return reports favorable to their Western or Russian masters.

If that happens, it is more likely that Putin is replaced by someone far, far worse.

At least Putin was trying to have an agreement with the West, but Obama/Biden were not honest brokers.

The war footage has sucked, with the high number of dead and destroyed equipment, you would think we would get some decent video.

“We haven’t” so I’ve pretty much tuned the conflict out.
