Perhaps you don’t have any knowledge of history, but the “malo” is common in Slavic lands to describe the heartlands - hence the term MaloPolska for the area around Krakow, the pre-1500s capital of Poland etc.
Actually, “malo” means “little” or “lesser”. A goodly part of Ukraine was known as “Little Russia” until the 20th century. The rise of nationalism in Europe during the 19th century (inspired by the French Revolution) did not stop in Western Europe, but had very much spread to Slavic lands by the latter half of the century. Nationalists began calling it Ukraine at this time (which had been used by some off and on in earlier times — “Ukarainia” means “on the borderlands/at the frontier”).
