When I was in the Marines, way back in the early 70’s, we lived in open squad bays at that time, not individual rooms like they have now.
We didn’t have assigned bunks, so everybody just bunked at whatever part of the squad bay they felt like.
All the blacks stayed at one end and the whites at the other, self-segregating.
Everybody got along fine...............
