The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is receiving $400 million for employee pay raises, $61 million more to hire employees, and expanded collective bargaining rights, which could lead to future pay increases, according to reports.

OpenTheBooks and Reason reported that the TSA will receive $400 million as part of the 4,000-plus-page, $1.7 trillion omnibus bill passed with the aid of 18 Republicans in the Senate and signed into law in December.

The Golden Horseshoe is a weekly designation from Just The News intended to highlight egregious examples of wasteful taxpayer spending by the government. The award is named for the horseshoe-shaped toilet seats for military airplanes that cost the Pentagon a whopping $640 each back in the 1980s.

Our representatives bluster and speak of wasted money and corruption and then vote “yea” when they time comes to approve or increase the budgets of governmental agencies. These same agencies are corrupt and take our tax-payer dollars to line their own pockets. As do our representatives who vote as the lobbyists tell them to do.

We are no longer governed by our representatives. Instead, we are ruled by dictators who make sure our wages never increase above the rate of inflation, but instead decrease. We cannot start a business without large fees and numerous forms to complete, and any error will bring the IRS collectors to our door.

We are not allowed a say-so in our children’s education, nor who we can hire or fire in our businesses. Our children are being told they can change their “gender” at will and against their parents’ wishes. Criminals are allowed to roam freely and do as they will against law-abiding citizens and our representatives tell us that it is their “right” and we should not complain are try to stop them from doing so.

Our country needs a hard “reset” if it is to survive into the future.

“Our representatives bluster and speak of wasted money and corruption and then vote “yea” when they time comes to approve or increase the budgets of governmental agencies.”

The same can be said about voters who reelect those same corrupt politicians over and over again.

They aren't our 'representatives'. Clearly.

TSA is a government entity. When a government entity is doing badly, Congress always gives it more money. How else would they get better?

People who criticize this either spent too much time in the private sector or have common sense.

Does this include training to treat people as though they’re customers? They think, because they’re not employed by the airline (as they state themselves), that we’re not their customer and that they shouldn’t be polite. They are public servants and should be trained to behave as such.

They are rude and outright hostile, treating people like cattle. If they were effective that might improve things but they’re not - quite the opposite, downright incompetent. When I’ve had orders barked at me I’ve looked at them and said, “you mean ‘please’ right?”. You should see the stare you get. I’m only asking for civility and professionalism, apparently it’s a surprise.

"The lie that will not die."

I was on active duty when this issue came up. The $640 wasn't for an aircraft toilet seat. It was for the toilet enclosure. Something never brought up was that the manufacturer used the same enclosure in commercial planes and charged the commercial airlines much more. The govt does get ripped off for things it buys, but in my limited experience, it is for things buried deep in the contract, e.g. a subcomponent that only an engineer can figure out.

For instance, I commanded a Dragon platoon. The Dragon missile system had a very good simulator. The simulators were rugged but taken to the field often and lived under harsh conditions. The circuit board on the simulator failed regularly due to our abuse. I had gone to the manufacturer's trainer/armorer course, so I knew how to take the simulator apart and diagnose. We only had three simulators. So if one went down, training was degraded. Wait time for parts was long, so I figured out what part was needed (vice the normal process of replacing a circuit board). I quick trip to radio shack, $5-10 for the part, 15 minutes replacing the part and we were back in business. For some strange reason, the simulators never went down again and I made sure that at least two people in my platoon went to the trainer/armorer's course every year. I don't remember the cost of the circuit board, but it was close to a thousand dollars.

Oh yes, circuit boards in the early 1980s were much simpler than now.

After being in the aircraft business going on 20 years now a $640 toilet seat is a bargain.

I’m a retired electrical engineer electronics guy. Back in the day, I’ve repaired many a circuit board. Today’s surface mount stuff is nearly impossible to repair.

I grew up in Norfolk with the big Navy base. Plenty of times I encountered Navy guys buying parts in Radio Shack using their own money. Again, back in the day.
