House bill rescinding $71B for 87k IRS agents stalled in Senate after nearly 4 weeks without vote

AHouse-passed bill rescinding $71.5 billion for the hiring of up to 87,000 IRS agents has languished in the Democrat-led Senate for nearly four weeks without a vote.

The funding was part of the $740 billion Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) that Democrats passed last year.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy pledged to schedule a vote to eliminate the funding as his first order of business in the new, Republican-led House. The GOP bill passed along party lines on Jan. 9.

Republicans have argued the funding could be used to target Americans earning less than $400,000 per year with additional audits. In response to the criticism, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen wrote to the IRS instructing the agency not to use additional resources to target individuals or families in that category.

"Instead, new funding will crack down on tax evaders among the wealthy and large corporations, invest in technology upgrades that help taxpayers, and hire more customer support staff to prevent backlogs," the Treasury Department said in a statement in August.

Ahead of the Inflation Reduction Act's passage on a party-line vote using budget reconciliation, Democrats defended the roughly $70 billion expenditure for the IRS as a revenue enhancement measure that would help pay for the legislation.

In a Rasmussen Reports poll published on Jan. 17, a solid majority of likely voters queried (56%) supported the House-passed bill that strips the IRS funding from the Inflation Reduction Act.

I really don’t think that hiring 87,000 pick pockets to go after the money belonging to American workers is something the Founding Fathers intended. The idiots came along and put in that screwup.

What the house GOP must do is make clear that the money for these additional agents will not be included in the next budget. Make those jobs 1 year term jobs and nobody will want to take them. RIF (reduction in force) them the following year.

I remember this kabuki from obamas second term. All sorts of repeal bills.

I have absolutely no political strategy cells in my brain, and I can see how to handle this: pick something that the Senate reallyreallyreallyreally wants that isn't part of the MAGA agenda but is something we're willing to live with (e.g., letting the present DREAMers stay here, since they're going to anyway) and say the House will pass the DREAMers bill the same week the Senate passes the rescinding of the IRA agents and SloJoe signs the rescinding legislation.

Perhaps I’m a negative nabob, but it seems like the overwhelming percentage of “common sense” legislation introduced in DC either “stalls” or never sees the light of day, while funding for left-wing projects, whacked as they may be, sails on through.

Well, we knew that would happen. There is no surprise there on it.

We’re all saved from the King’s Taxmen!

A strongly worded letter from the dithering halfwit with the weird NYC accent.

Another achievment of McConnel, having aided the Dims in preventing a GOP Senate majority.

Unfortunately you are right on the money. fooling ourselves is not going to fix it. And the house needs to do the very same to the Senate bills. Absolutely nothing... Let them just die.

If it passed the Senate then Biden would veto it. It is very hard to rescind and roil back Democrat garbage. Same as it is near impossible to deport illegal aliens.

Use the debt ceiling increase to remove the funding for the IRS. Problem solved.
