Manchin: McCarthy Is ‘Most Reasonable’ on Debt, We Should Look at 5-10% Spending Reduction
Breitbart ^ | 02/02/2023 | IAN HANCHETT

Posted on 02/03/2023 6:26:01 AM PST by ChicagoConservative27

On Thursday’s broadcast of the Fox News Channel’s “America’s Newsroom,” Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) stated that House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s approach to the debt ceiling is “most reasonable” and argued that spending reductions of 5-10% across the board should be explored.

Manchin stated, [relevant remarks begin around 3:45] “Kevin and I had a nice conversation a couple of weeks ago. And I think he’s most reasonable taking the approach, can’t we at least recognize 31.5 trillion is unmanageable and we shouldn’t be passing on to our children and grandchildren, we’re writing checks they can’t cash. And I know the president’s personality, you put those two in a room, I knew they could get along. I’m very hopeful this is going to work out without any drama or any theatrics. The bottom line is…it was $13 trillion of debt when I came on board and it continues to grow. I’ve been told if we just did our job on time, and why won’t we look at this, get our budget done? When the president gives his State of the [Union] address, like governors…when that happens, basically, you put your budget there. They work towards that. If we get ours done on September 30, I’m told that we could reduce the spending by as much as maybe 5 to 10% across the board, just doing our job on time. Shouldn’t we look at that?”

Not racking up enormous amounts of debt for wasteful spending

What a concept! 😒

We need a 25%+ spending reduction just to get to where we are spending what the Fed takes in...

Anything less that that the deficit still grows, just at a slower pace

8 Trillion of our 31.5 Trillion dollar debt was given to us by Trump. There is a lot to keep Manchin busy.

The American people, even supposed conservatives on this forum, are addicted to socialism. It’s a real problem, and it’s why Fedzilla cannot live within its means. “We the People” won’t let it.

Actual cuts or cuts from the expected 20% growth in spending?

A 10% reduction is doable without anyone noticing any difference. It would involve eliminating entire departments, not reductions that could be reinstated from one year to the next.

There’s more. This is the big elephant in the room no one notices. It doesn’t’t stare them in the face. The GOP needs to go to the mat on this issue. A 5 seat majority is easier to keep in line than a majority that squishes can hide in.

Senator Manchin should immediately switch over to the GOP if he has an ounce of smarts in his brain!!! If not, fellow Americans...I strongly suggest you begin to learn to speak Chinese. The Communist Chinese own Biden and his son Hunter from head to toe!!! Told you all ages ago...you would all come to regret Democrat, Joe Biden and all his cohorts!!! Sad days ahead for our once great USA!!! Lucky for me I am old & over the hill very soon, and will not be around as you all learn the Chinese ABC’S!!! Sad...SAD...SAD!!! You did this to yourselves!!!

A 5% to 10% cut after having raised it 1,000%. That’s the ticket to prosperity and survival!

Correct. TN may tax a lot of things but we have NO income tax, and the budget is Constitutionally mandated.

"Dems and most Repubs just want to spend."

Washington is rotten to the core: the Decadence of Western Civilization in America. Ultimately it is the American People who are responsible; it is they who tolerate such evil.

ROFL!!!

"We the People" have been voting for this crap for decades.

Hey! I have an idea!

Let's get the government completely out of the old-age pensions business. Privatize Social Security. Completely.

What say you? What do you think "We the People" would say in the voting booth?

I always hated across the board cuts at work. Some things need cut more, some completely and some may be under-funded (not in the government). Across the board cuts are the lazy way of doing it. Real reconning of all budgetary items needs to take place.

I keep thinking this is why he endorsed the same ole gope leadership. He is was and has been big government.
Why else would he bless mail in ballots then talk about stolen elections.
He enabled this entire strategy that has accelerated to political prisoners in. Gulag to now mutilating and chemically castrating teens.
How many f dollars did he spend during the covid plandemic.
And are we up to trillions on vaxxes here and our money spent sending vaxxes to “poor” countries.
This is his record along with travel restrictions, unless you’re an unvetted Syrian and no freedom to assemble, unless you’re burning cities.
We lost more freedom under trump than Obama.
His bumpstock ban though.. wow that erased mass shootings.. kudos for his anti 2A edict.

I have never been able to understand that with 535 of the advertised "best and brightest" there is not enough collective IQ to be able to balance a budget.
