At 99, Henry Kissinger is a living demonstration that you’re never too old to learn new things — or to unlearn wrong old things. The former secretary of state has implicitly acknowledged that he dramatically misjudged Russia, its war against Ukraine, and the qualities of Ukraine’s leaders and population.
After Vladimir Putin described the dissolution of the Soviet Union and its repressive empire as “the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the century,” suggesting it should be reconstituted, Kissinger urged America to “show greater sensitivity to Russian complexities.”
After Putin invaded Georgia, Kissinger stated that “isolating Russia is not a sustainable long-range policy.” Then, when Putin seized eastern Ukraine and Crimea, Kissinger urged Kyiv to adopt neutrality between Russia and the West: “If Ukraine is to survive and thrive, it must not be either side’s outpost against the other.”
In May 2022, he told the Davos Economic Forum, “Negotiations need to begin in the next two months before it creates upheavals and tensions that will not be easily overcome. Ideally, the dividing line should be a return to the status quo ante. Pursuing the war beyond that point would not be about the freedom of Ukraine, but a new war against Russia itself.”

The Hill has never been right about anything. Left, yes. Never right.
No.
Pathetic old man, even at 99 years old, can’t speak one thing he truly believes.
He’s still fighting the wrong war....................
“Was he ever right???”
No, he wasn’t.
His policy of detente continued the Cold War into the 1990’s and it only ended because Reagan confronted the Russians with an overwhelming military buildup that they were helpless to counter.
The fool set the stage for China to become an economic powerhouse that stole millions of American jobs.
He was also dead wrong about containing Israel instead of letting the Jews obliterate the Muslims who tried to slaughter them.
Kissinger sure loves him some Manchurian Candidate Barry
He was right the first time, but then pushed to change his mind because his neocon buddies told him it was too late to back out of Ukraine now, so he relented.
Thats ok, he was fight ing the wrong war back then too....
Kissinger always believed Soviet Marxism would win because it was so attractive to 3rd World leaders and populations. It would even take root and win in the West. America’s goal, he felt, was to delay the inevitable till a time when Soviet Marxism had mellowed and lost it totalitarian edge. Thankfully Ronald Reagan and men like Bill Casey, and JPII, and a woman like Maggie Thatcher knew the truth about Soviet weakness and brought about its end.
So they got Kissinger to bend the knee…
“Vladimir Putin described the dissolution of the Soviet Union and its repressive empire as “the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the century.”
That is the cornerstone for all the Putin Pleasers in America.
I fail to see where he was wrong.
He says now that there should be a negotiated peace? When was he for the war against Russia?
Can someone tell me what his opinion is now? Sounds like it’s the same as Trump’s, ie there should be a negotiated settlement.
These sophisticated guys are all mad that Reagan’s simple plan “We win, they lose” worked.
“These sophisticated guys are all mad that Reagan’s simple plan “We win, they lose” worked.”
From everything I’ve seen, read, or heard Ronald Reagan was not just a genius but the best President we’ve ever had.
I’m sorry I didn’t get to know this while he was alive.
