Is this another case of Trump choosing the wrong side politically?
Either Trump is aligning himself with major swamp rats or he is keeping his friends close and his enemies closer.
Or is this just another example of that 5D chess everybody thinks Trump is an expert at?

Trump made it clear he was not choosing sides in this "election".
All he is doing here is congratulating McDaniels.
