BERLIN, Jan 24 (Reuters) - German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has decided to send Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine and allow other countries such as Poland to do so while the U.S. may supply Abrams tanks, magazine Spiegel reported on Tuesday. A government spokesperson declined to comment. The defence ministry was not immediately available for comment. The decision concerns at least one company of Leopard 2 A6 tanks that will be provided out of Bundeswehr stocks, Spiegel said.

Ukraine ping

Whether the dam has broken is unclear. And when Germany will issue an official statement, along with a delivery schedule, is equally murky.

Good. Now let’s see about sending F-16’s and A-10’s to Ukraine.

The Leopard 2 is diesel powered. That makes much more sense than sending Abrams that require jet fuel. Logistically much easier to support the Leopard 2.

One problem I can see is that Ukraine is getting a little bit of one kind of system from one country, a little bit of a different system from another....

...and since they are advanced systems with different consumables or replacement parts, it’s going to make training and logistics very hard.

I guess NATO nations are going to find out how their legacy tanks perform in the new “drone era” of warfare, so there’s that!

Both Germany and US politicians disregard the counsel of their military leadership on this fruitless escalation

Clausewitz said “War is a continuation of politics by other means”
Now we are evolved to “Politics is a continuation of war…by any means”

“The tank is powered by Avco Lycoming (now Honeywell) AGT1500 gas turbine engine, developing 1 500 horsepower. Essentially it is a modified helicopter engine, adapted for use on tanks. It is a multi-fuel engine, which can run on any grade of petrol, diesel, aviation fuel or kerosene. This engine has impressive performance and is compact for its power output. So even though the Abrams tank is heavy and bulky, it is surprisingly agile. It is faster than many other tanks and has superior cross-country performance.”

So this war will be over when? 1 year? 5 years? 10 years?

Yes, you can run a jet turbine engine on a variety of fuels, but if you want to not have to do maintenance after a few hours of running, you better be running clean jet fuel. Anything else and components will get hot and burn out in short order.

Jet aircraft have the same warnings regarding using fuels other than jet grade fuel.

As clear sign that the U.S. and NATO will sent the necessary equipment and supplies for Ukraine to take back the occupied areas of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia this spring and summer to kill Putin’s land bridge as well as cut off Crimea from resupply.

War will be over as soon as Putin is deposed/dead.

Good. Now let’s see about sending F-16’s and A-10’s to Ukraine.

The Dutch volunteered some F16s last week.

You can run an M1 all day long on the worst diesel out there with no additional maintenance issues. I’ve done it.
