In two days an EU regulation will go into effect that allows for ‘acheta domesticus’, aka house crickets, to be added to flour, bread, pasta etc. as an ‘authorised novel food for the general population’.

They want you to eat bugs without you knowing it.🦗 https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/ALL/?uri=CELEX%3A32023R0005

The application requested for partially defatted powder obtained from whole Acheta domesticus (house cricket) to be used in multigrain bread and rolls, crackers and breadsticks, cereal bars, dry pre-mixes for baked products, biscuits, dry stuffed and non-stuffed pasta-based products, sauces, processed potato products, legume- and vegetable- based dishes, pizza, pasta-based products, whey powder, meat analogues, soups and soup concentrates or powders, maize flour-based snacks, beer-like beverages, chocolate confectionary, nuts and oilseeds, snacks other than chips, and meat preparations, intended for the general population.

So now we will have cricket powder in all sorts of foods. A quick trip to Pub Med gives us this interesting publication:

Allergenicity assessment of the edible cricket Acheta domesticus in terms of thermal and gastrointestinal processing and IgE cross-reactivity with shrimp

Food Chem. 2021 Oct 15;359:129878. doi: 10.1016/j.foodchem.2021.129878. Epub 2021 Apr 20.

"In conclusion, the ingestion of A. domesticus proteins poses serious concerns to the Crustacean-allergic population. The high stability of tropomyosin may represent a risk of primary sensitization and clinical cross-reactivity."

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33934031/

And then a quick jog over to the Mayo Clinic's website and you see this little jewel:

"An anaphylactic reaction to shellfish is a medical emergency. Anaphylaxis requires immediate treatment with an epinephrine (adrenaline) injection and a follow-up trip to the emergency room. If anaphylaxis isn't treated right away, it can be fatal."

https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/shellfish-allergy/symptoms-causes/syc-20377503

You vill eat ze bugs!

False information... but based on an interesting story.

Crickets are being added specifically as a novelty. (No, I understand this is not what “novel foods” mean.) They MUST be labelled, including both the scientific and common names of the cricket, and that label shall also include a warning label about possible allergens

1. The designation of the novel food on the labelling of the foodstuffs containing it shall be ‘Acheta domesticus (house cricket) partially defatted powder’.

2. The labelling of the foodstuffs containing Acheta domesticus (house cricket) partially defatted powder shall bear a statement that this ingredient may cause allergic reactions to consumers with known allergies to crustaceans, molluscs, and products thereof, and to dust mites.

This statement shall appear in close proximity to the list of ingredients.

Wheat Flour:
75 or more insect fragments per 50 grams, 1 or more rodent hairs per 50 grams (1 cup flour = 136 g = 4.8 oz)

I don’t think anything is new. Just they don’t have to clean the crickets anymore..................

Why grind up perfectly good fish? I eat real fish several times a week. Flounder was for lunch today.

I knew a guy who was allergic to shellfish. He almost died few times, when some little piece of something sneaked in his food, mostly in restaurants.

My grandfather had the same problem and rarely ate out. When he did we went to one restaurant that knew him and his allergies.

Fish flour was made of rough fish, uncleaned and ground up, treated. The plan came to a halt when the USDA insisted they be cleaned first.
