Chicago mayor tells residents to stop using cash if they don't want to keep getting mugged

CHICAGO (TND) — Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot has proposed a solution to end rampant crime in her city: Stop using cash.

Lightfoot suggested those afraid of being mugged opt to use digital forms of payments instead.

During a debate for Lightfoot’s upcoming race to regain control of her seat, the topic of safety concerns, particularly those of street vendors, came up.

We have been in Little Village working with street vendors, understanding what the nature of the crime is, making sure we're doing things in concert with them to help them make sure that their money is secure, not use money if at all possible, using other forms of transactions to take care of themselves,” Lightfoot insisted, when asked what solutions she was implementing to reduce the number of muggings in Chicago.

Reactions to Lightfoot’s comments generated a flurry of criticism, including arguments the Chicago Mayor was setting the stage for “a cashless society.”

Muggers don’t like it when muggees don’t have any money or valuables. They become irate and shoot you dead.

I’ve seen this story several times, and it seems to me she is talking about street vendors going cashless, not the average person . The headlines seem misleading

“I’ve seen this story several times, and it seems to me she is talking about street vendors going cashless...”

Perhaps, but that wouldn’t make her advice any less inane.

It is the logical result of fewer people carrying cash.

Does it make any difference if they beat you up and steal cash or your credit cards? And since you have to carry one or the other to survive as no one gives away food or clothing on good looks anymore, this article is incidental.

47% of Americans have been victims to credit card fraud in the past 5 years.

https://www.creditdonkey.com/credit-card-fraud-statistics.html

Unfortunately, a very low rate of credit card fraud is being solved. According to statistics, less than 1% of credit card thefts are solved yearly. So, if you are a credit card theft victim, your chances of getting your money back are almost negligible.

https://www.valuewalk.com/how-credit-card-frauds-are-caught/

Credit card fraud is the highest percentage of identity theft in the US. So can someone please tell me why carrying cards to buy groceries is any different to the thief than cash especially when the reward for the theft is so much higher and it can be used and then abandoned?

Muggers do know to go after credit cards. Anything you can spend, they can steal.

In DC I always carried at least $20 on me.

I wanted any possible robber to concentrate on getting his ‘fix’ instead of knifing or shooting me.

I have a better idea: Illinois is now a Shall Issue CCW state.

Everybody (not a felon) gets a CCW, and the police issue a notice that any citizen who shoots somebody with a felony record, the police will presume lawful self defense if it’s at all plausible.

“street vendors, understanding what the nature of the crime is, making sure we’re doing things in concert with them to help them make sure that their money is secure, not use money if at all possible”

One of the nice things in NYC is to be able to buy fruit off a street vendor.

And it is better quality than what you get at Gristedes? When my now wife lived on St Nicholas Ave in Harlem, there was a vendor who sold lots of tropical fruits from DR and beyond that we’re always delicious.

Maybe online sales of goods should be more closely investigated.
