Apparently, personal safety when you’re working on your roof is a political matter nowadays.
At my old house in Maryland, at least once a year, I would have to clean the gutters, as I had leafy trees in the back yard, including maples which shed all those helicopters.
I climbed a six foot ladder planted in precarious conditions to do some of the work. No falls, though, so really, I’m probably luckier than I deserve to be.
Looks like we have DeSantis’ successor in ‘26! :-)
It’s best to stay off your roof. Countless stories of injuries and deaths.
I have always considered it irresponsible to have someone else do something that you won’t do yourself if the primary objective is to trade someone else’s risk for yours..... There are of course many caveats that change the equation that relate to some combination of experience, expertise, physical capability and equipment. For this reason, I would never hire one of the neighborhood kids to do all kinds of things such as clean eavestroughs. If I’m hiring someone, it has to be someone who has equipment, training and experience that essentially turns what might be a relatively dangerous effort (without those aspects covered) into a relatively harmless effort. Since for most things I’m more equipped than most people I could hire (and since I generally get totally annoyed at the errors contractors make), it generally means I just do the tasks myself when it comes to my own home.
Liability Insurance for the company doesn’t do you a lot of good. What you want is a company that has Workmen’s Compensation Insurance that covers in the state where the work occurs and where you can get a policy endorsement naming you as an Additional Insured.
Sarasota Congressman Greg Steube sustained several "serious"
but non-life threatening injuries after being knocked off a
ladder while trimming tree limbs on his property Wednesday
and falling 25 feet.Steube was admitted to a hospital intensive care unit after a
bystander witnessed the incident and called 911. He was still
in the ICU Thursday morning, according to his office.
I didn’t see anything that brought me to question the report. What did you see?
It’s possible one of the limbs bounced up and hit him after the piece he was cutting separated from it. I know a guy down here who sustained a serious back injury in 2022 after cutting a tree limb. The limb bounced up and sent him flying off his ladder, and he hit the ground. Fortunately, he had no spinal cord damage, but he was out of commission for a while and taking painkillers. He healed up by the providence of the Lord, and he’s in good shape now.
One of my other neighbors had an incident in which he was doing some tree work and fell 40 feet to the ground. He has not been quite the same since, and he experiences pain from that to this day.
Getting hit by a tree limb can be fatal. Add a 25ft fall to the mix and potential injuries are also life-threatening. Steube is likely highly sedated today, and out of commission for the coming weeks. I’m going to declare this a bone-headed decision on his part to perform this dangerous task.
What wx station have you ? Davis ?
I’ve had one for 16 years now. Zip 33523
Hasn’t had a working humidity reading in most of its life. I’m not dumping $100 each time it quits.
“I didn’t see anything that brought me to question the report.”
I’m sure you’re familiar with FR’s “Everything is a conspiracy” cult.
Betcha he was ‘cleaning the gutters’——
“Leaf Filter” to the rescue———
There are ‘tree trimmers’ that operate at a distance-—on a log pole. Stihl makes them.
LONG pole——FAT FINGERS
Operating a chainsaw on a long pole while on a 25ft ladder = bone-headed. Also—there should be a spotter for these tasks.
Prayers for the Congressman.
It says he’s “doing well,” so I guess he’s going to be OK, but it could definitely be serious.
THANKS! Good news!
That’s why you pay the money for scaffolding, rent or buy...
