Yes, this is a proxy war. In 2014 Russia attacked Ukraine because they didn’t want Ukraine to join the EU and NATO so from the very start this was a Russian proxy war against the EU and NATO.
Thus it is only fitting that NATO should help Ukraine defeat the Russians since Russia is by proxy waging war against NATO.
